If I read the users manual correctly, you can use DX lens on the 610 - there is a setting in the menu for it.

Then you can save your pennies and get your lens later :)

You do not want to put a DX lens on an FF camera. But I am having trouble with you wanting to put a low budget lens on a top of the line camera. Just a thought, have you checked out refurbished? If you can find one at a REPUTABLE dealer you might be able to afford the glass that the camera deserves.

I would assume it is similar to the crop mode on the 7100 where you can set either DX, 1.5 (the default), or select an additional 1.3 crop....which will increase magnification, but will reduce image size slightly.

My understanding is that it will be like shooting with a cropped sensor camera (crop for Nikon is 1.5) -

You can download the 610 manual from the Nikon support site and the list of compatible lens (and all the info around each lens) is on pages 285 - 291.

Update: link to manual:

What is your price range for a lens, Graham?

I have a nice little lens that came with my Nikon 6006 film camera. It is the Nikon 35-80mm lens. It is no longer made, so you would have to buy it used. I would suggest looking for it through B&W, but I have seen it listed on ebay for $50. I have used in on my D7000 and have gotten very nice photos. It is a full frame lens.

Nikkor 50mm 1.8- is a spectacular lens-performance wise- and is dirt cheap brand new. No matter the lenses you end up with, your kit should contain one of these anyways.

That's a very hard question to answer when you don't specify a budget. To some a "bargain" may be well over $1000, for others it may have to be under $100. Giving a specific price range would get you much better answers.

IMHO the 24-85 mm VR 3.5/4.5 G is great value, I love mine.

I agree. I use it on my D800 and it produces very sharp images.

Go with what you have - a nice camera with 24mp should not be used with a mediocre lens. Kinda defeats the purpose and you would never see most of the value of the larger sensor camera. Besides, the D7100 has other reasons why it would be a better choice, mostly having to do with menus, button accessible controls, etc - all that contribute to better handling.
