What would be considered the best wedding photography lens for the Nikon D700?

Probably the workhorse of the holy trinity: AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G ED.

I totally agree with Snowbear!

If funds allowed or I would rent or borrow: the 70 x 200 F/2.8 II. I would add the 16mm Fisheye. I would not use the Fisheye for many "people shots" but love it for pics of the Church, inside and out as well as reception site. Be prepared when you shoot large groups that you will take a more pleasing image if you move back and stay at 50mm or more than shooting at 24mm. Not too many wide angle lens flatter the folks standing in the wings of a shot. ...I am sure you already have this covered but in case you do not, I would make sure you have a backup camera, better yet a second shooter. We use 3 shooters for almost all weddings. I did a wedding by myself in Aruba and was totally wiped out. Too many places to be at the same time, too much gear to carry.

It is difficult with one person. I am getting the Sony a77 in a couple of weeks and the 16-50 lens that comes with it is supposed to be very good, that, along with a Sigma 24-70 2.8 for Sony, should cover my shots up close...I believe i will get the 70-200 Nikon VR. I may have to wait a little more to get the VR II version of that lens since i hear it works best with a full frame camera. There are lots of opinions out there and it is hard to decide on a lens, but I fguess I can't go wrong with the new version 70-200. What a bummer, because I can get my hands on a 70-200 VR lens (supposedly 1000 shots on it)for 1,500!!! Anyone care to enlighten me?

For some reason, I like Sony, but my Nikon is the best...i have an old 80-200 2.8 Nikon lens but it has no ring for a tripod and that sucker is super heavy! I also have a Sony a55, and a Sony a700 besides the Nikon d700...once I get the Sony a77 I will hire a second shooter and possibly a third if it is economically feesable. Thank you nikonshooter for your advice.
