Went to the desert this weekend and saw this scorpion. Handheld, manual, flash. All suggestions are very appreciated. Thank you

Awesome, awesome shots, Terri! I love the position you captured, with its tail hanging menacingly off the rock - and like it is ready to attack :)

Thank you Linda!!! He/she was not in a very happy mood. Every year in August all our kids, grandkids and some friends go out to the desert and spend the weekend. We lay around the pool all day. The heat forces us to be lazy. After a few margaritas I don't even know how hot it is.

Not too shabby.
Did you use an UV-light to find this scorpion? With proper filtration, scorpion fluorescence can be digitally captured.

Thank you Douglass!!! We went on a night hike and found him under a rock. I took him back to the hotel and took pictures of him in the early morning. After I was done my son took him back to where we found him. Terri

That is a critter I would shoot with the 180mm. Images look good Terri - nice detail. Personally, I would take a DoF hit, open aperture to f/11 - f/13 and kick ISO down to 100. I think you will find less noise, more detail, and crisper photos.

Are you shooting with the 7D or the SX50?

Thank you A-PeerR for commenting and the suggestions! I was using my 7D with my macro 100mm lens. I'm surprised at how difficult it is to get a good macro picture. I am constantly amazed at the macro pictures you and others post.

It is hard at first but keep at it. You are doing well. My comments aren't critical criticisms, rather I hope suggestions that may help you out. 7D has a noiser sensor than newer cameras many on the forum shoot with. Not a big issue as long as you understand this limitation. I used to shoot with a T2i and noise was always an issue. To combat it - I always ran ISO 100, opened up aperture a bit, and increased flash power as needed to compensate. Try it out you may see an immediate improvement. Thank you for your kind comment, it is most appreciated.

Nice !! A lot bigger than the tiny scorpions we have here in Georgia...Ours are really dark brown/black and less than an inch long...Wouldn't want to get stung by yours.... A sting from ours are like a bee sting.
