I set my camera to Manual, and it wouldn't shoot, so then I set it to A for F/11 and then set shutter to 1/250 sec. ISO was set for 200. Again the camera changed the shutter setting. First shot is out of camera, but cropped, no other processing.
The 2nd one is processed with Kodak Photo Gallery, slightly sharpened.
How'd I do?
Out of camera, just cropped, no pp

Looks plenty good to me, especially if these are among your first attempts :)

Wonderful,Margo. You really got a clear shot of it. I was told to check and see if my ISO was on AUTO, in the camera, and turn it off. I still can't figure this out. I had mine set on Manual and 100 ISO but it keep going to ISO 400. I need to read up on this.
What is interesting is how the moon appears according to where the images are taken. It's fun to see where the images are taken. We are on opposite ends of the US and there is a decided difference.
Great shots. This just never gets old.
Excellent, Margo!
Maybe somewhere deep in your user guide is info on why the camera is changing your settings :)
Per GeneM's suggestion, you could even give auto-contrast a go in Picasa. If that's not a good result, try the "highlight" slider on second tab.
Excellent shots Margo.Great stuff.

Thank you Angela, I had to wait out the fires, so it was quite late when I went out there, keeping a watchful eye for skunks at the same time. I'm still not happy the way it came out, but this was the best of 20 shots.

Thank you Donald. I've been working on these moon shots for 2 years, now, off and on. I just can't seem to get the settings right in my camera. I need to take a week and just go through the DVD that came with my outfit, the Brian Peterson book and the Nikon book, and get it set in my head, what the different settings allow. It's very confusing, not like setting my Nikon F camera with the 'Match the needle' for exposure. If only I had waited to buy this camera I might have bought the Nikon DF.

Thank you riverlass. I figured out the ISO problem; that stays as set by turning off the ISO auto. On my camera, there are 2 different areas to adjust the ISO. I think this is stupid on Nikon's part. You should have the ability to make the changes in just one area. The f number stayed the same. But the camera kept change the shutter speeds, so there must be some other area setting in the menu that needs adjusting.
I saw the difference of the moon's rising on Linda from Maine's photos. I guess the Earth's axis is more tipped than what I thought.

Thank you Linda. I have to take the time to read all the books on my Nikon and then put them into action so I don't forget them, but right now, I really don't have the time.
I tried using Picasa on my previous moon shoot, but I can't figure out how to crop the way I can crop in Photo Gallery. I think Picasa would do a better job on post processing, but my only problem is with the cropping.

Thank you Jim. I always appreciate your looking and your kind comments. How about you; have you attempted another moon shot?

It doesn't have to be one or the other. You can do edits in one, save the file (or "save as" in order to preserve the original), then open in the other editor for additional work. I do that all the time :)

How's this? I adjusted original (after cropping in Gallery) in Picasa. I tried to put a circular border around it, but it didn't line up evenly.
