I am looking for advice on whether there exists a pocketable camera with a lens starting at 24mm and going on to 200 or 300mm, with a viewfinder (an optional accessory is acceptable) with an aperture of say 2.8-4.0? If such an animal does not exist, advice on a similarly or better specified bridge camera would be welcome.

Many thanks for the advice I have received in the past from the many knowledgeable persons this site hosts, and thanks in advance for any counsel on the present topic.

Check out the terrific Lumix ZS40, and save yourself some money as well as having to buy a new jacket. Or for a faster lens and a bigger camera, check out the Panny Lumix FZ200 (2.8 constant aperture). The FZ1000 is easily as big as a mid-sized DSLR.

Many thanks. These sound very interesting and I will certainly check them out. Thanks for taking the time to advise.

If you have somewhat big pockets, you might want to look at the Olympus Stylus 1. It has a 28mm to 300mm (35mm equivalent) f2.8 lens, internal stabilization, and I think it is a 2.4 million pixel electric viewfinder. There are some other cameras similar to the Olympus but I think the Olympus P&Ss are very well thought out.

The new Sony RX100 III has a viewfinder.

Right. I hope things are better in Boston. I lived in that area a century or two ago when I was at Harvard. I did not own a camera at that time, so knew nothing of the photography scene.

They are. Newtonville Camera.

Next month Canon is supposed to release the Powershot G17 and it will fill your needs if it maintains the same size and features as the G16. To my knowledge it is the only pocket camera with a viewfinder most of the features of a DSLR that will go from 24 to 200.

Thank you Jerry. I haven't used a Sony before, but this seems to be a good camera to check out. Khalid

I recently got the new Sony Rx100M3. It is an amazing little camera that most definitely fits in a pants pocket plus it has a terrific viewfinder. Only issue you'll have is that it is a 24-70 mm lens. I'm learning to move closer to my subjects as the camera doesn't have mega-reach.

Thanks. I'm not in a terrific hurry, so I'll check out the suggestions I've received and also do a bit of waiting. The III seems great, except might be a trifle short on the zoom.

Thanks. I plan to use the camera mostly for travel and in my case it involves a good many interiors and buildings generally. The wider end of the zoom is therefore more important for me than the longer, although of course if one can get a decent aperture with a longer zoom I won't complain. Thanks for the tip.

Jerry..

I got my III from B&H and I get 30 days to return it. My hope is that they will come out with the IV within that time!
