I am contemplating purchase of new iMac and not sure if I will need the 1 Tergabite Harddrive? Other choice would be the 500 Gigabite @ $200 less in cost. Tough decision.

Depends on if you want to store photos internally or externally. I bought the 750 SSD and spend the money on a 3TB thunderbolt drive. This is where the photos are stored.

I think I'd be tempted to go for the smaller internal drive and 2 larger external drives. For redundant back ups.

A lot of the time you only need the data you are working on and 500gb is plenty of space for the operating system your software and the data you are working on.

Of course there is a cost the internal drive will be faster to access and find stuff on. Also if you are working with video files you may need a larger internal storage space.

One thing never seems to change for me most drives are at least 90% full most of the time.

It's probably a good thing to have a little pressure to back up and clear some space. It's almost inevitable your back up isn't as current as you would like when the hard drive fails.

Thanks for your input. Would rather keep them internally.

Then get the biggest one you can afford.

There is no such thing as too large when it comes to hard drives. I once got a 1TB external drive because I wanted lots of storage for the future. Long story short, I just bought a 4TB external drive.

Programs are much larger than they used to be, and you will want room for storage. I keep all data on my hard drive and backup to externals. Never have data on just one drive. Lots of Mac user keep their images on an external drive, rather than on the internal. I want everything kept on the computer.

How much space are you using for photographs now? 500 gigs is a lot of room. Storage iis moving onto the cloud; I think you get 5 gigs free with a Mac iCloud account (also free), but there is a fee for more space. It is cheap, but it is still a monthly charge. If you like your back-up nearby you can put the $200 towards an external drive. If you later change your mind and go to iCloud, you can use the 2nd drive for local storage.
It will be interesting to read others thoughts on this. Good shooting!

I'll take issue with this statement. Storage is not moving to the cloud, only backups are moving to cloud based. This does not relieve you from needing storage space on your computer.

I would say go with the 1TB internal drive now AND purchase 1 or more external drives later, but then I use my computer for much more than just Photoshop. I also have HDR software, NIK, OnOne and Topaz suites as well as slideshow software. And that doesn't count music, movies, e-books and the software that catalogs and edits all of those.

I agree. I meant to say, I thought I said, that his backups could be on the cloud in stead of on a 2nd drive at home. 500 gigs is a lot of photos. It all depends on what else he uses his computer for. 1-terabyte isn't what it use to be. Damn that "bloatware"

Back a few year I purchased several Mac's for my classroom. The sales person told me "You will never fill this 40MB hard drive". Notice, MB and not GB.
Buy for the future not for the present?
How often do you change computers? Some, not me, purchase a new computer every few years. This might be a factor in the HD size.
Two externals are a good idea. Things do fail, even a Mac. Did I say that?

iMac or MacPro? I like and use external hard drives (4). Yet, I would opt for a 1TB hard drive and as much RAM as I could muster because I like to put a bunch of junk on my desktop.
