Why scan some are asking? I scanned some old photos years ago and was able to improve them substantially by using my PaintShop program. Many of the originals were darker than desired and I was able to brighten them up. I then created digital photo albums from those reproductions on both DVD and print that were a lot better looking than the originals.

It is worth the effort for a manageable number of photos, especially those that have archival significance for you.

Perhaps it would help if you told us the purpose in scanning them.

Prints, slides and negatives are safer in their original format than converting to digital.

Furthermore, it is not possible to retain or capture the original quality of a print or negative in scanning. Scanning always takes something away. If you store them properly, you will have better quality to work with when you decide to do something with one or a few.

Well, yes and no, Kuzano.

You do well by asking the purpose of scanning, since the OP just said "old film photos". Her idea, your idea and my idea of old photos can be totally different.

Coincidentally, since this thread began, I have inherited boxes full of "hundreds of old film photos", many from 100 years ago. These have never been properly archived and suffer from fading, dirt, mildew, water spots, dust, scratches, dents and tearing.

An example below is one of the 30-second scans we've talked about, and yes it can be improved over the "original" with lots of post processing time.

Another option- my brother had a setup where he did normal slide projection onto a screen using the slide projector. Camera was on a tripod, he took a photo of each projected image. They came out acceptable once loaded onto the computer. Seems like a fast system.
