My daughter's birthday is this weekend. She has a D3100 that she likes a bunch. G.A.S. hasn't set in yet. Thanks God. She has the 18-55mmVR and settles for it. She's quite good with it although with 2 young daughters she doesn't have a lot of time to practice.
I found a Nikon USA 55-300mmVR refurb and bought that for her. She always used to like the reach of my 70-300 on my D600, so I think she'll love the 55-300 on her D3100. Back when I had my D3100 I had a 300mm, but unfortunately it sold with the camera.
I hope she likes it.

I gave my son a D5100 plus the 18-55 and 55-300 as a present a couple of years ago. He has been all over with it and taken some fantastic shots with the 55-300. Your daughter will love the lens!

My first DSLR (D3100) came with a 55-500mm VR. I now use a D7100, but still use this lens. It is a fine, sharp lens & excellent value for money. It is a little slow in poor light, but for 'normal' daytime use outdoors, this is not an issue.
I use it for wildlife and birds in flight, it's a good consumer lens. I also carry a Sigma 18-250 that is a little more versatile as a walking around lens. The Nikon comes out when I want a little more reach and I have a specific purpose for its range. It'll serve them well.
Thanks for all the positive vibes! I really liked the results when I had my D3100 with long shots like at the Air and Water Show.
The Chicago show is next week featuring The Blue Angels. She can break it in then.
I have the 55-300 VR as well as the 18-55 VR with my D5200. I think she will be VERY pleased with the addition of the new lens. Those 2 lenses together make for a pretty versatile package.

I think the 55-300 is an excellent lens.
I gave mine to my daughter-in-law when I got a 28-300 and my wife, to whom I willed my old D5100, got an 18-300.
I recently got a Sony NEX-7, which is an APS-C sensor camera, and more recently got a Nikon lens adapter for it. Now I want the 55-300 back. I still have her 55-200 to trade back. I checked yesterday and she is less than enthusiastic about giving it back. IMHO the 55-300 is FAR superior to the 55-200.
