Question: I have several Nikon Lenses. They were used with my older Nikon FA. Are these old lenses useable with the new Digital Cameras? (NIkon)

Yes but thy not have full function like auto focus. Check Nikon's website you can match any of their lenses with your camera

My experience using the Nikkor film lenses on Digital bodies is that you have to use the Manual setting(s). Also there is a focal length (mm) to consider because it is about 1.5x greater for the film lens.

The crop factor only applies to DX format. If you have the FX (aka full-frame) sensor, there is no crop factor for the lenses for your FA (35mm film).

Here are two charts defining different Nikkor lenses, and lens compatibility with all Nikon bodies:

I have a Nikkor 100-300 mm. f5.6-f32. Manual focus, and zoom. I want to sell it, I think? I was not sure if the old lenses are compatable with the new (to me) digital stuff.. It was purchased by me in 1984. It is like new, I have no idea of its value. I was thinking about a Nikon 5100. I have no idea today which one to buy. I was into Photography big time for about 20yrs. I just got interested again, but am fairly new at Digital. Any sugestions?

If it's from 84 it should be an ais lens, so it will meter on a D5100 but you'll have to manually focus it. You won't have a split image in the viewfinder like you did with your old Nikon, little harder on a digital for accuracy. I have no idea what the value would be, you may want to check eBay.

The D5100 is a good choice, you'll like it, the articulating screen is very handy. The two popular kit lenses are the 18mm - 55mm and the 55mm0200mm, both have image stabilization.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I will keep reading for a while before I buy, but the 5100 will most likely be the one. Thanks again!! Boone

My daughter is a photographer and dropped her short lens. I gave her my short kit lens from my new D3100 and I use the 35-80 off my old film nikon. I love it because I am learning and shooting manual so a manual lens is right down my alley.
