I currently own the D7000 but am thinking of upgrading to the 7100. My main reasons to upgrade are to have the higher megapixels so I can blow pictures up bigger and possibly better image quality. Is it worth it to upgrade? I don't shoot any video.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

I looked at a d7100 too. I have had a d7000 for over 2 years now (up from a d3000) and it still does what I need it to do. Ask yourself how "big" a photo are you going to print, do I need all of the extra bells and whistles, etc? IMHO there isn't that much difference. Rent one for a week or look to buy a used one.

Hi, thanks for your reply. Before I went digital, I would occasionally blow pictures up to 20 X 30 from a 35mm camera. They looked great! I've been told that 20 X 30 with the 7000 might not look as good. I guess the best thing to do would be to try one to see how it looks. No sense in spending the money if it's not necessary. I certainly don't need any more bells and whistles!

I have gone 16x20 with no apparent loss of detail. My experience has been more pixels for cropping. I started with a 3.1mp Kodak and moved up to a d3000, d3 and d7000. If you don't go for tiny crops you may not need the extra mp's The d3 is 12mp and the d7000 is 16mp and when cropping, there is a difference, albeit, small. Good luck with the decision.

The image quality of the D7100 is substantially better than the D7000 and yes, it also have more features.

It is Nikons BEST APS-C camera without a doubt, and an improvement over the D7000... but enough to justify a new camera purchase this close into the life of your existing camera?

Tough call.

One of the more recent rumor mills about the D7200. Coming out later this year.

Thank you for the information. I just called Nikon and spoke to them, and also called my local camera shop. The D7100 is definitely an upgrade over the 7000. So I guess it all depends on whether or not it's worth the extra $. As for a D7200, if there is going to be one, unless it's a significant upgrade over the 7100, it's probably not worth it. Like a lot of the posts say, better to wait a few years so that the upgrades will be worth it.

From the same size sensor, I don't think going from 16mp to 24mp will make a significant difference in image quality. If you would make a 10x15" enlargement with a D7000 image, it would basically be the same pixel count as a 12x18" print from the D7100. It is "only" a 23% increase in linear pixel resolution.

Overall, the D7100 is a better camera, but I think it is for the overall technology improvements over 3 years more than the megapixels.

If the D7200 ends up being announced next month as some expect, I think it would make sense to at least see what it offers, and for how much.

I generally agree with 2-step upgrades. From a D7000 that would skip the D7100 and go to the D600/D610 or D7200.

Thanks for the reply and advice. Waiting for the D7200 or better sounds like the right thing to do.

At least to see what options appear by the end of the year.

After reading several replies and posts, it might be a good idea to wait until the D7200 or whatever it will be called comes out. It is tough to justify going to the 7100 if the next one is going to be even better.

Thanks.

Thanks! Good idea to wait and see what the 7200 is all about.

I did it and was very happy with the upgrade. I don't shoot video either.

Thanks for letting me know. I think I'm going to wait until the next one comes out, D7200? After reading several replies, that sounds like the best thing to do. If it was going to be a while until it does, then maybe the 7100 would be the way to go. but now, I think I'll wait a bit longer. Glad you like the 7100!
