I though if you put your camera on manual you could set your f stop and your speed to what ever you want.I took a reading with my light meter and set it to that. I took a few shoots and then my camera would not let me take any more.It went crazy and locked up.Then it came up with wild settings. Just want to now if my camera is fixing to hit the dust. Thank's for any help ahead of time. By the way i have a Nikon D300

Were you using a manual focus lens?... Did you set the aperture via the control dial or an aperture ring ?

I have a D300 and never experienced this...

You may want to simply reset (I forgot how) before calling the funeral home?

I also have one and never had this happen. When I get home, I'll see if I can help you trouble shoot it.

Im not familiar with D300s but could that be a focus priority/shooting priority setting issue?

The advice above is the first thing I would try.

Off the top of my head, there's one thing that might explain fluctuating exposures. This would be if you accidentally set the AEB (auto exposure bracketing).

The only time my D300 has "locked up" was when I had the shutter release set to only fire when the camera+lens has locked on exposure.

I don't know what happens when the shutter dies. How old? How many shutter actuations? I believe this camera is rated at 150,000 actuations.

Hope you figure it out.

Is it possible that the camera is set to shoot ONLY if in focus? If so, were you in focus? In the menu, Custom Settings, Autofocus, the first two settings AF-C & AF-S

Hello, I have had that problem with mine and all I did was reset it. To reset all you do is press the Quality button and the exposure compensation button +/- for several seconds. On my camera there is a little green dot by both of them

One of these days will upgrade but enjoy the D300 and thinking maybe upgrade glass and just keep the camera.

But anyway this eliminated my problem and hopes it helps you...........

When (not if) you do; go all the way up to the D810. You will be shocked.

I have the D300 like you and purchased the D800e. The improvement was mind boggling. I still have the D300 and still enjoy it as when I had it the first day. (It replaced a Fuji Pro S2 - that I gave away not long after and is till working. That camera is in the hands of a bow hunter. I last saw it six month ago.)
