I think it is a very nice shot, although a CTO gel would have help to blend the flash better with the ambient and the flash should've been modified and moved way closer to the subjects for a much softer light.
But overall, I really like it.

Nice loop lighting. Good conection with the subjects. The background works well. All-in-all you did well.
A very nice setting, however the flash is a little too harsh on the faces.
Nice shot. The light does harden the skin tones. I would have like to have seen more natural tones. Possibly diffused light

Nice pose . . . and in general I really like the shot with just a couple of suggestions for improvement. The direction from which the main light is coming is really quite good.
The flash is a bit harsh, but this could be improved by shooting the flash through a scrim, using a large diffuser/reflector on the flash, or better still adding a reflector to lighten the shadow side of the faces.
All in all I would say that this shot is better than the average portrait entered here for critique. I would like to have a little more information on how this was shot . . . flash position?, flash modifier?, distance of flash from subject?, background?, background lighting?, etc.

I like it....Thanks for sharing.

I think it's lovely. I would just have diffused the flash a bit more.

Yep, that would help a lot.
Thank you all for the honest feedback. This was on a beach at dusk. One speedlight full power with 1/2 CTO. 2x2 softbox on a lightstand camera right about 6-8' from subject. I think distance was my enemy. I forget my settings but I was dragging shutter as much as I could to get the orange sky. Prob was around 1/30 ISO around 400 and f/8 I believe.
Oh. I also didn't want the horizon line to be too bright where it would go through their heads.

Based on this info I suspect the reason the flash seems a little harsh is because of the distance from flash to subject. Ideal distance is the diagonal measurement of the softbox . . . approxinately three feet in the case of a 2x2 softbox. Because you are outside and have zero bounce back from your flash a reflector would have made a great difference. Nice job though and nice job on the background.
I believe you could overcome the major objections in post processing. I'm sure someone here could town down the couple of bright spots on the woman's skin, as well as the spot on the boy's neck. As was mentioned above, a quality portrait, all around.

I used Shadows and Highlights and 'lightened' the photo. Is it any good?
