Hi could someone tell me what exactly the shutter release cable is good for? I have an idea , also what would the remote one do? I have a Nikon d5200. Are they so you can just snap a picture without actually touching he shutter release button, kind of like they do photos at portrait studios of babies? Thanks !

Remotes are for people that can't hold a camera steady or just set the time delay in the camera. Remotes work good for bird photography.

The RF shutter release is really great for gettin licence plate numbers on vehicles who refuse to slow down on a gravel road that I live on BUSTED!!!

I use a wireless release when I want to get shots of dogs playing or running agility while I'm out there with them, or for family portraits - put the camera on your tripod, set up the shot and I can be standing with the family and take multiple shots without running back to press the button every time to start a timer.

Some remotes have timers built in allowing you to do time lapse photography.

The shutter release cable is also used when shooting in bulb mode.

I have a D5200 and it is limited to a 30 minute exposure or 30 minutes of multiple timed exposures, the way I read the manual. I have a bulb timer which lets me go up to 99 hours on a time lapse and set the increments for the shots. I also have an Amazon Basics wireless remote (I lost the Nikon one right away and the Amazon one is only about $10) that lets me get in group pictures or is good for when I do HDR photography from a tripod and I don't want to introduce any vibration by pushing the shutter. It really helps to get tack sharp images. Both devices are worthwhile investments.

Yes, that is exactly, precisely what they both do. The shutter release cable is a wire, the remote does the same thing but wireless.

Yes, but since the D5200 has front and rear infrared inputs that is a better choice. You can buy the cheap ones on Amazon for under $10. They work fine.

You use it when you have the camera on a tripod. With the D5200 you can even swivel the screen around to do selfies with it.

Remotes are good for:
1 taking pictures with you in them too
2 taking pictures and not adding camera shake by touching the shutter button.
3 taking portraits of children where the photographer needs to interact with the child from a closer position to the child
4 taking pictures of subjects that are going to be (at some point and time) coming and going so the photographer can be some distance from the camera and still take a shot

I'm sure that there are more uses. I use it mostly for those shots when I don't want to introduce shake using a long shutter duration.

They let you activate the shutter without touching the camera. They let you move around, depending on the length of the cable. With Nikons (At least the three dslrs that I've had) the remote control which operates on IR will do the same thing, but let you roam more. I generally use a radio remote like the Yongnuo 603 because it will also activate my flash units as well and has even more flexibility.
