Took my friend out yesterday to take some pics at the local Dam...birds and BIF.
He recently bought a 60D and he's having trouble getting good results from it.
Can any of you Canon guys give me some hints to pass on and help him...is it in camera settings, a focus issue, maybe something else he's over looking..?
He's getting pretty discouraged. I'm getting him up to help him with his PP but he's not getting good pics to edit and PP will not fix a bad, out of focus shot.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Ron.

A couple of examples, he's PP'd these, they are not off the camera.

These are quite small file sizes to examine, and the exif is blank, so we have no info on settings he used :-(

SX, I'm looking on my phone and don't see anything wrong here. Obviously there must be?
What problems is he specifically having?
Are those PP'ed shots been cropped? If so how much? What is he using as his birding lens? Is it the std. kit tele-zoom? ;-)

Yeah those photos are soft.
What lens and what settings were used?
Slow floating ducks should be a cake walk.

These are cropped and edited pics he emailed me, that's why they are so small Linda and I just checked myself and don't know why the Exif data isn't showing...??
Even so, if you look at them you can see they are not sharp, detail is sadly lacking and even the colours aren't right...?

This is one of mine (drastically resized and only 390kb) taken at the same time, same place as his.
Also his for comparison...

They are PP'd and very small file sizes but even so, the quality/sharpness is just not there...
He's using a Canon 70-300mm lens
They are resized from the full 18MP to what you see here...

Yes, that's why I'm concerned, his BIF ones are excusable as he's never tried it before but the static shots should be much better from this camera I would have thought...?
For some reason the Exif data is not showing so I can't help you with the settings...

SX, it's gonna be hard to tell anything. Yours are standing still, his are dynamic.
Was he using support? If he's using a kit lens at full length and shot wide open, that will probably cause some softness.
The ducks are tiny as we see them, and theyve already been highly cropped. Not much there to start with. If he is front/back focusing, he should try a different lens, as that camera is not micro adjustible w/o sending it in. He also needs to check where his focus point is. Is he using center point, or are they all activated.
Have him send you a full file, and you post it full size. That could tell us a lot! ;-)

No support, I wasn't either and I was using my 150-500 @ 500mm...I assume Canon lenses have some sort of OS or VS in them...? Not sure what a kit lens has to do with it, my everyday lenses are a Nikkor 18-105mm and a 55-300mm and they takes brilliant shots...the quality in his shots is much worse than the difference between a kit and a more expensive lens...
See the second two pics, both are static...

Here are two more, mine taken with a kit 55-300mm Nikkor kit lens and his taken with a Canon 70-300mm lens...surely the quality of Canon lenses isn't the issue here...?
I did get him to make sure he was using centre spot focus...

Both cropped to a similar size...
I'll get him to send me a full sized, un PP'd pic...

Even a real small resize and only 100kb still looks OK so I don't think the problem is one of resizing..

I doubt the hardware is a problem. Take his camera and shoot for a while and see if you have the same issue. The slight general softness he is getting could be camera movement or settingx

We should get the originals posted of the bird on the wooden post (in profile) and the yellow baby ducks. The EXIF data from either picture will help lead toward an explanation of the soft focus.
