Unfortunately, because of aircraft size restrictions, you run into that more often then not with the smaller regional carriers of the world. You should stand in line and watch the faces of the passengers who didn't read the restrictions before leaving home. Most aren't too thrilled about having to check their carry-on AND pay an additional charge. I commend the OP for paying attention to the details. It makes life much easier for everyone.

I commend him too. I'm going to the Galapagos this November and I've done my homework as well. But restrictions can change and do change, so I plan to recheck the restrictions when I'm closer to leaving. Fortunately for me, the airlines I will be on are larger airlines and don't have such limited restrictions.

Have a wonderful time in Indonesia. It is one of my favorite places to dive. Be aware of the currents around Komodo if that's your destination. They can be really vicious.

You definitely want your Mac, and be prepared to pay for overweight. As a diver and photographer (even very amateur like I am) luggage fees are just part of whatever trip you take unless you drive. Considering the cost of the flight and the trip, the overweight fees are minor. I put my regulator, mask, a swimming suit and change of undies in my backpack. I pack my camera gear and laptop in my rolling carryon... sometimes I have to put my camera and some batteries in my backpack too. I put my housing and strobe in my dive bag....those are things that are less likely to disappear and are relatively sturdy. I have been known to take a lens to a friend who lives in Indo to be sure it got there. Backscatter has shipped camera gear to a customer in Bali. but I wouldn't ship anything beforehand.

Enjoy your experience photographing the weird and wonderful. The macro subjects are AMAZING.

Leave the MacBook at home, and do the editing when you get back, or rent a Mac at the destination to edit there. Leave the dive gear at home, and rent it at the destination. Take the bare minimum of photo gear, or take none, and rent it at the destination. The less you take, the less it will cost to take on the plane, the less will get stolen, the less will get damaged, and the more you will have in good working condition when you return home. When I travel, I take no checked bags, one carry on bag, and a minimum of electronic / photo gear. I take almost no clothes-except what I am wearing-and I buy more clothes at my destination. If I need to rent more gear of any sort at the destination, I do so. It cuts down hassles. I get: fewer stolen goods, fewer damaged goods, shorter inspections at check points, and come home with receipts for rented gear which makes deducting business expenses easier.

Diving Indonesia, like diving the Galapagos, is not easy diving. It's nice to be familiar with both your dive equipment and camera equipment. If you're caught in a ripping current, trying to figure out either sets of equipment can not only be frustrating, it can be dangerous. I have found some of the parts of Indonesia that I've been to are easier than others, but fighting unfamiliar equipment can really take the joy out of a dive.

I take my Mac when I go so I'm not looking at 1000+ pictures when I get home. I can also organize them so I know which dive (or at least day) I saw the pygmy seahorse. Being able to download also makes it easier for me to know if I have to adjust my speed, aperture or ISO. Looking at an image on my camera doesn't tell me if my picture is sharp or just a little fuzzy.

LFInger/Jeep Daddy did you have a good time in the Galapagos? I hope your trip was great.

Had a great time, but we didn't go to the Galapagos. Somebody told me that I wouldn't be able to get a good Pina Colada there! We went to Bora Bora (2012) and Hawaii (2014) instead. No shortage of good Pina Coladas in either place!
Never been scuba diving either. Too many things with teeth down there! I'll stick with skydiving!

I'd love to go to Bora Bora. I thought the post mentioned the Galapagos. Diving there is tough enough that I won't do it again. Getting into trouble isn't good for me or those I dive with; however, I gather there are some very cool trips for land lubbers. The sea lions on the beaches, the brown pelicans, marine iguanas, tortoises etc., etc. are really interesting and relatively unbothered by people. Getting up close and personal is not a problem...sea lion pups can be very curious as well as cute.

Sky diving isn't in my future. My knees start knocking when I get on a very small step ladder. Most things with teeth in the water will leave you alone if you don't mess with them. Diving is very cool.

Time to go back to catching up on my UHH e-mails.

If you ever get the opportunity to go to Bora Bora, do it. Incredibly beautiful! I don't think it is possible to take a bad photo there, although I certainly tried!
As far as diving, I may try it yet. My problem is that I can swim pretty well under water. Staying on top is a different story since I can't swim, unless you count the doggie-paddle! :-D
