It seems like there is a DSLR vs Mirrorless debate that is replacing the Nikon vs Canon one. It doesn't have to be either or. Mirrorless is gaining in popularity not so much as a superior system to DSLR but as a system for those who want to maintain quality in a smaller and lighter package. Both systems have their strong and weak points. I don't think that my EM-10 takes better pictures than my D7000 did but for me it is more enjoyable to use.
And, I did love the D7000 when I had it.

Excuse me for trying to add some levity to a stream that has seemed to go off topic. How about the Fuji XT-1 or the Olympus EM-1... as good as any DSLR viewfinder.

Please read my whole post. Nowhere was it "off topic"...Levity is fine....I don't know you, you don't know me. You chose my post to reply to. I just meant to show that if it IS a joke (as I pointed out), a suitable emoticon would be advisable, especially when you are addressing people you do not know and have not established a set of ground rules with...In other words, I had no way of knowing if you were making a joke, of just being a troll...

I apologize. You were not off topic and I was being too flippant with my reply. I also agree that the OVF's of the best DSLR's are probably better than most mirrorless EVF's. It is however debatable what "better" means in every situation. That can be a topic for another post.

I am a viewfinder hater. There are micro four thirds cameras with or without viewfinders - guess which type I have! If all you need is a pentaprism-shaped hump to help your camera hold your head steady, get a wood block and some glue.

As for grips, if you mean that huge battery grip, no way. I have a large right hand grip that screws on as an accessory. It's just a contoured piece of plastic, and makes the camera easier to hold with that "huge" 75-300mm lens that collapses to the size of a soda can. When I want it to look like a point-and-shoot, the grip goes in the bag.

My DSLR showed me a wonderful optical image in the viewfinder but I what I wanted to see was the digital image that the sensor uses. My mirrorless (a Panasonic) does that.

I find small size a big plus. With a 20mm lens, it fits in a big pocket. The 100-300mm weighs slightly over a pound. It reminds me of my father's Pen half-frame.

Why the hate? Just put a strip of tape over the viewfinder to keep yourself from constantly peeping into it.

I seem to notice many mirrorless camera owners are purchasing grips to hold their cameras. The purpose of the mirrorless camera is to reduce weight isn't it? I would think by the time one has put the grip on the camera it would be near the weight of a DSLS. Then when a longer lens if placed on the camera wouldn't this defeat the purpose of going mirrorless unless mirrorless cameras takes better quality photos than a DSLR. I have never owned either camera, but planning on purchasing a mirrorless. If there is a DSLR that is as light as a mirrorless I would like to know what it is. Thank you

How about just carrying a (few) spare batteries?

Check out the SONY NEX 6 with:

A large flip screen - High Rez

A Pretty good eye level viewfinder - Automatic and on the left side and . . .

An pretty awesome smart phone app that allows you connect via Wi-Fi, and view you scene on your phone, and trip the shutter on the phone - all with no hands on. Imagine the possibilities.

All in a "pocketable" camera (with kit lens) and an APC size sensor.

I can't speak for the rest of the Hoggers but, anything that makes a camera more stable is a benefit even if it adds a little weight. I'm not a fan of mirrorless & therefore no viewfinder cameras. They're inherently unstable because you don't have a viewfinder to put up to your eye to help stabilize them. Somebody out there is going to argue against my observation.

You asked for it - all of the high end mirrorless cameras that I would consider owning have an eye level viewfinder that you put up to your head (just like a DSLR), thus giving one the extra level of stabilization you describe (just like a DSLR).
