Ouch. Mountains, flip-flops, and distractions. A sad waste of a future. Condolences to friends and family.
Best wishes....
I take a lot of photos out in the wild. I often think about trying to get unusual perspectives; but no photo is worth falling off a cliff for. It really is terrible that the lesson had to be so severe. Nature does not suffer mistakes very kindly.

Tragic, indeed! Reminds me of husband and I taking tour of Channel Islands California many years ago. DH went off trail to take pics of seals from the top of a 100-ft cliff. I had to throw an embarrassingly terrible tantrum to get him away from the edge. He thought I was overreacting. Later, from the boat, we saw the cliff from underneath. He had been standing on a SAND ledge extending out about 8 feet with a crack already forming. I was forgiven my tantrum. Now, if I think we are getting careless in our photo enthusiasm, all I have to do is say "Channel Islands," and he listens.
I looked up that area, and this year alone there have been three fatalities and one very serious injury. Hiking has become trendy lately and people are venturing out into areas that they are not prepared for. Two of the fatalities in this area of the Catskills were on trails that were closed. When you add to that poor footwear and a lack of experience/common sense, you have a recipe for disaster.
