An interview with manofhg,
1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I've enjoyed photography ever since I can remember, but have only been going more seriously for the past 5 or so years.
2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I don't have formal training unless trial and lots of error count. I mainly shoot landscape, but want to branch into portraits and weddings among other things.
3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
As I've seen expressed by so many, it really is up to each person what they like or find good. I generally try to make my landscape shots something that makes the viewer want to go there or if they have been it is how they remember.
4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
The picture in the contest was at a Boy Scout event where they had some stage performers. I walked up to the base of the stage and set up my tripod. I shot it using a Canon T2i.
5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I use LR and am learning PSE, but did not take it through Elelments. If I pulled up the shadows the bass player's face would appear some, but not much. I preferred to keep the rest of the picture at about the right exposure. Having his face visible didn't add to the picture and without it, made it stand out a little more.
6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
Don't know who has inspired me, but just took the opportunity to shoot dozens of pictures at that concert, only a couple of that individual.
7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I like that shot okay, but would have tried other angles ISO settings, etc. Tried to balance amount of light so as to get sharp images (not blurred by motions of the performer) that weren't too dark.
8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
Much more than I know now.
9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
I guess actually the camera bag I use has allowed me to take it backpacking, serves as a fanny pack or wear it on my front while my backpack is on my back. That way it is always handy, but not swinging or getting in the way.
10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I only have two and probably use the 18-55 the most, but would not want to be too long without my 55-250 either.
11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I recently purchased a Canon 430exii and an umbrella. I have rarely used the flash and still learning on the umbrella. Generally, I don't take lighting equipment with me right now.
12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
The Boy Scouts is where I spend the most time. Photography easily fits with it though on outings. recording events, etc.
13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
Went to a motorcycle race once and shot many what I thought were pretty good shots until I realized the film didn't engage on the take up spool. Glad to go digital.
14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I have posts on Facebook and Flickr.
http://www.facebook.com/eric.manneschmidt/photos_albumshttp://www.flickr.com/photos/30090498@N05/15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Thanks for your votes. I feel honored especially after seeing so many other's work and reading critiques. For that matter, I would love for others to critique this pic. I'm sure there is a lot of good advice out there. I'm not afraid of criticism. I had rather get an honest opinion than someone just saying "great pic".
