Okay, So I have heard the rule of thirds before from my photography class back in HS (when we still had the tanks and film lol)

What other composition rules do you think about when your taking a picture? I know rules are no fun lol but what is in the back of your mind when you compose a shot?

In my classes we discuss composition in terms of guide lines not rules. They are important to learn so that when you decide to break one you know what and why; and it has to work.

Think lines, leading lines, digonal lines, curves. watch your edges, include only what is important in the frame.

Rule of thirds is the most talked about as it helps people stop putting everything in the center of the viewfinder.

Dead center is usually dead boring as there is no visual weight on eithet side.

For me, I fill the frame only with what is important to the scene.

I like using rules of thirds , but these digital camera have all the many focus points and it the is off then you pic is not focused ! It would be nice to be able to set an average focus point. like an old manuel focus fresnal glass film camera .

Diagonals, Leading Lines Triangles and Circles (Ovals) are all other types of compositional elements frequently use by artists and photographers, though seldom discussed by photographers because some of them are more difficult to use.

Rules were made to be broken. You see a person dying in the street, you pull up to a red zone (you just broke a rule) and rushed the person to the ER. This example is over the line but you get the idea.

It might be good to know the "Sunny 16" guidelines and then make adjustments for CP and ND filters if used.
When things are moving or could move, have room in the picture for them to go.
Just two thoughts that had not been mentioned.

I discuss those in my classes and really don't find them so difficult to use, but perhaps that is because I have been doing this so long it has become second nature.

Your light meter will make the changes for exposure for cp and nd filters. However the sunny16 guidlines can certainly help lean which options are used in various lighting conditions.

After all, as photographers all the have to work with is light and form.

I try to keep in mind the flow of lines. Leading space. When appropriate I think triangles- like when i am taking a group pic.

Now Ovals... expound on circles and ovals... I want to learn more about this one!

You see oval and circular compositions in some of the great master's pictures, but they don't happen often in extemporaneous shooting. Try shooting some arranges stuff on a table top and see how you like the idea.
