In the comments on the Nikon D810 Shooting Experience in yesterday's edition of DP Review, one person said "Use Nikon software for Nikon RAW files. You will see miracles!"

Interesting comment but I'm not sure if this gent is sharing a commonly held perception. I've never used Capture NX2 and was hoping to get some insight from the Hogs.

It won't be a miracle but it will allow you to edit raw files that you can't edit in Photoshop yet until they finish the update for your new camera body.

I've tried capture NX and wasn't impressed. Sure, it is better than View NX. But it's no Lightroom...or even Aftershot Pro

Interesting. Adobe might not be finished updating everything for the D810 and that may be the basis for the comment. I've never heard a blanket comment here that the Nikon software is "miraculous," so I was curious about the rationale.

Here's just one of many threads explaining what happened to NX2 and how the new software NX-D is being greeted. Read most of the posts and you'll see if you have a D810, you'll probably wind up in LightRoom.

Certainly a possibility although DP Review does have a tendency to attract more experience practitioners. But there are always a few--just like here. :)

Well, if you spend a lot of time there, you'll be able to separate the wheat from the chaff. I agree, there is a lot of both, but there are some very experienced photographers there like Robin Casady.

Absolutely agree. And there are some very experienced and talented photographers here as well. Everyone contributes to the body of knowledge, even if their ideas and posts are controversial and, uh, pointed.

Update for all adobe products came out yesterday. NX2 is being eliminated, replaced by NX-D. Dreadfully bad software, but it is true to the image quality intent of the cameras. This does not make up for the lousy interface, and inability to play nicely with other programs. Use Lightroom/Photoshop for everything, or Capture One for better color - though it too does not play with plugins.

Nikon software is great for single image processing, but not suitable for a production workflow. It's too slow and clunky.

I've been using Nikon Capture NX-2 for a few years and it's great for processing Nikon RAW files. With NX-2 you're utilizing 100% of the information in the RAW file. Unfortunately Nikon has now replaced NX-2 with NX-D. I don't think the D810 is supported with NX-2. I'm still using it because all of my cameras are supported.

Capture NX-2 will not open the NEF (raw) from the D810. You have to get Capture NX-D. With Google's purchase of Nic Software Nikon seemingly has no plans to continue updating NX-2; Nikon's CSR told me they had no idea when of if NX-2 would be updated.

I have it and will use it as long as it can be used.

Same here. I love everything about NX2, even the interface is OK after you get the hang of it.
I don't know if anyone else here remembers Nikon's original Capture program going back over 10 years ago? If you do, it had the same excellent RAW-converter but there were hardly any editing tools besides the basic ones, pretty much like NX-D is today. NIK's U-Point entered the picture with the first NX version and it was like a whole 'nother world.

Others have said that if Nikon was into the software in a half-hearted way, then it makes sense for them to just concentrate on the hardware. It's a shame it has to be this way, but we've got to move forward. As I have said previously, many NX2 users have already totally migrated to LightRoom, including Jason Odell, an expert at Nikon software.

I can edit D810 files in PS. There have been new updates to Photoshop as recently as yesterday. You have to go on line and look. Adobe does not announce.
