Das, just so you know, refurbs ARE new.
I would NEVER buy a camera new, over a refurb!
And if your P&S is going, you can even use it for the Loyalty program to save more. Call Canon and ask about the Loyalty Program.
Just saying. ;-)

Does an AE-1 or T90 qualify for loyalty credits?

Just askin'. :)

Peter, any Canon still camera is good for it, Digi or film. I'm always on the lookout for a $2-$3 P&S just to keep on hand. ;-)

Amazon. I have not checked out refurb yet. Just figured I would buy new since it may be the last for a long time:).

The Nikon D5300 runs circles around the Canon T5i.

DXOMark rates the T5i with a score of 61 compared to the D5300 with 83.

If you haven't bought yet, a bit more research would a worth the time.

Thanks for all the help. As for canon vs Nikon, I made my selection from using a friends t3i and liked it. I will continue to research the Nikon d5300. It took me less time to decide what truck to buy:). Have a great day!

My first DSLR was a T3i with the 18-55mm. I quickly added the 55-250mm. They were a great combination. The 18-135mm is a good lens but, depending on what you shoot, you will probably miss the reach of the 55-250mm. You'll get the most bang for your buck with the 18-55 & 55-250. I wouldn't worry about the 50mm prime until you have used your DSLR for a bit and figured out what focal lengths are going to be the most useful to you. You may find that a different length prime will suit your needs better.

Know what you mean. I started with an XSi, and upgraded to a T3i when Canon had a special going on them as refurb for south of $400. I believe they have that going on now.(BTW, the wife wanted me to sell the XSi to help pay for the T3i.....the XSi is now my backup camera. I MAY sell it in the future when I decide to go full frame!)

For what it's worth...
I have that exact kit (the camera and the 18-55 and 55-250(not STM)) up for sale along with bag, battery grip and extra batteries.
It's in great condition.

Do your sons play sports? Indoor or outdoor? This should effect which lenses you need.

I have been wanting to upgrade from my point and shoot sony h2. Dang thing almost hit the wall several times but made it since 2007. I would try to take the picture and nothing but beeping from the camera. We'll anyways I've been looking at the t5i as my upgrade. I research day and night but I am having a hard time deciding on what package to go for. Max budget would be 1000. I shoot lots of family pics with our two boys but love to take scenic pics.

I am stuck between these three options to start my journey:

1. 18-55 and 55-250 STM $949
2. 18-135 STM $949
3. 18-55 and 50 1.8 $875 and get a good zoom later.

I just have to jump and get this in the mail so I can sleep again and not stay up all night watching YouTube and reading reviews...:). I am going to take a class once I get the thing to use it correctly.

Thanks for any advise/suggestions you guys have. What a great forum for those of us just starting out. Thank you.

You need to be comfortable with your decision as to brand. Those of us who shoot other brands will tell you why we like what we shoot over what others shoot. In the price range you are considering there are many very good options but only one that you prefer. Good luck with your choice and feel good about it and have fun. Depending upon your brand choice, different models within the brand may respond better to a particular need, so consider that, ask a professional, or run your thoughts by us. I get the point about buying your truck was easier, same for me when I bought my last new SUV. The camera decision earlier this year, not so easy...... Good luck!

I bought the 18-135 with my 60D and am happy with i,bit felt it didn't have enough "reach" and recently added the new Tamron 70-135mm f/4.0-5.6 DI VC lens which I also like and is far less expensive (Tamron had a $100 rebate) than the similar Canon lens.

Just my opinion. The 18-135 as a statring point is the way to go. These focal lengths will cover the overwhelming majority of your needs. You can always decide if you need more reach at a later date, when you have more experience with the set-up..That lens is a very good walk around . My guess is it will never come off the body. By the way. The starter set up in the days of film before zoom lenses was a 35mm and a 50mm and a 135mm . The 18-135 covers that range.

I would get the 18-135. It would be the most versatile. You'd have decent close ups, and you'd be happy with the zoom. It's a great inexpensive standard zoom lens that would make you happy, fit in your budget, and give you some time to consider your next move.
