Is the Highlight Tone Priority setting on Canon Cameras used primarily for shooting mainly white subjects or is it OK to enable it and leave it on that setting for normal shots?
Dang............I guess no one is very well versed on this. Probably need to leave it disabled for normal shooting I'm guessing
"This setting concentrates the available tones from the middle grays up to the brightest highlights, in effect expanding the dynamic range of the image at the expense of shadow detail." - from David Busch's Canon EOS Rebel t2i book.
I gather from this that no would be the answer.

When I first got my Canon 7D the factory had set the highlight tone priority and when I was shooting wildlife I noticed that the continuous shooting was very slow and would sometimes actually not focus at all. After much messing around I finally got rid of that setting and my camera is now working much better. I don't know if these comments help you or not but in my opinion you definitely don't want it on for continuous shooting in auto.
