I have a canon t41 and a need a telephoto lens.
I currently have a 18 135. I need one that can get closer to objects.
Thanks!
Sigma 150-500 or buy a 2x adaptor
Tamron released it latest greatest telephoto lens, it has many talking about it. It's the Tamron SP 150-600mm. I use one almost every day I'm in the field. It is "sharp" easy to shoot, comes with Tamron VC (same as IS) and for its zoom range inexpensive. Retails for $1069.00, and has a 6 year warranty. Add a 1.6 or 2X adapter and your off and running. Take a look at the shots by other Hoggers, just do a search for the lens, or just look for Regis's posts.

How close do you need to get? What will you be shooting? Canon makes a 70-300mm that would work very nicely for you.

Welcome to the modern world of photography and UHH. I think somebody out there would accurately suggest that each and every one of us needs help in one way or another!
There are a lot of good solutions to your problem that depend upon your budget and preferences.
I have a T3i with the 18-135 zoom like you. A few other things as well, including the Canon EF-S 70-300 IS that I bought used on ebay. It is well reviewed.
If you have deep pockets Canon is expected to release a new 100 - 400 L zoom soon. That may make the older model a little more affordable...
There are a bunch of other off brand lenses (Tamron, Sigma ) that are well reviewed and discussed here.
Good luck!

What type of photography are you doing and what is your budget? Do you prefer Canon or are you comfortable with other brands?Canon's 55-250mm and 70-300mm are both good lenses, but there are quite a few others to choose from.
I have a Sigma 18-250 and a 2x converter. I love the 18-250 but I'm not impressed with the converter. I bought a 500mm for the long shots.

Thank you kindly for your advises, now I know from where to start! :)
It's hard to go wrong with a 70-300. there are variants with or without IS/VC and they have been around long enough you could get a used one for a $100, or you can spend several hundred on the latest full tilt version from Canon. I have a much older non IS Tamron 70-300 i like because it will focus down to 3 feet. yeah, it is f5.6 at that point, but it still focuses two feet closer than my 70-200/2.8. If you are cozy with your local camera shop, a 70-300 is common enough they would likely let you borrow a used one for a weekend to see if it has enough reach to be useful to you or if you need to keep hoarding pennies and get an 80-400 or that Tamron 150-600.

Welcome! Can you give us a hint? What do you want to use the lens for, and what is your budget? You can get suggestions from a couple of hundred to over ten grand.
We need help to help you. Just about every lens ever made is being used by someone here.

A 500mm is a nice lens. The Sigma is less than half the cost of the Canon and it does a great job. I know, I own one. It also handles a Tamron 1.4X TC very well giving you a 700mm f6.3 lens and you still maintain AF. I love it, it is great for wildlife!

My Canon D60 came with the 18-135 mm lens and I also decided I needed more "reach". Last month purchased the new Tamron 70-300mm, I generally hand hold the camera vs. using a tripod.
Saturday, which was somewhat grey and overcast, I was shooting some hydroplane boat races and bumped the ISO up to 800 and the shutter speed to 1/1000 and then to 1/1200. There was considerable chop on the water so my boat was rocking and the racers were bouncing a bit; I probably should have used 1/1600 or 1/2000, but the slight blur was my fault not the lens'; the distance was 300- 500 yards.
Overall I am quite happy with the lens.

You should know that if you don't have a full frame camera There is a crop factor of about 1.6 meaning that a 40 m m lens would be multiplied by 1.6 giving you actually a 64 Millimeter lens A 2X extender will give you a 128 Millimeter and the aperture will have to be opened wider to let in the same amount of light you would have had with the 40 m m lens, on a sunny day. It shouldn't matter because you can get a fast shutter speed.
But there are drawbacks to non full frame cameras. So the lens you buy is rated for a full frame camera and you need to figure out what it will actually be on your camera
I recently returned from an African safari. Sometimes the animals were fairly close, and at other times, those like Cheetahs were a hundred yards away. There was no time to keep switching lenses, and it was also dusty. On one Canon, I used the 70-300 L. On the other I attached the new Tamron 150-600. I kept switching cameras. My images (even 16 x 20 canvas prints) were splendid from both lenses. So as others have said, it depends on what you are shooting and how far away you are. The bottom line is that I love both of these lenses. For animals in the wild on a safari I would give up neither. Just be sure to read the reviews and buy quality or wait until you can afford it. I also like Sigma lenses. Some are superior to comparable Canon glass at a lesser price.
