I prefer my Black Rapid sling strap over the factory neck strap.

Always a strap, for me it's the Op/Tech bino harness. Divides the weight over both shoulders. Should I want to use the camera without strap (rarely), two small clips take it off the strap in 2 seconds.

Having said that, I shudder when I see people carrying a camera in their hand with the attached strap dangling down. Once saw it happen that the strap caught the end of a bumper on a parked car and was pulled right out of the photographer's hand. Not fun!

It depends on where and how active you will be.

Use a strap if there is any danger of falling (wet weather, slippery ground, steep path, small boat, leaning over a long drop) your instinct will be to save yourself before you camera - you might need both hands.

If you are on firm ground, in good weather and don't have something else to carry (like a heavy camera bag), strapless is more convenient.

Use common sense - there is no "always" answer.

Optech sling strap except when shooting macro and the camera is on a tripod set down low to the ground. ;)

Whenever I let someone else take a shot with my camera, I have them put the strap around their neck. My granddaughters like to take pictures with my Nikon D5000 with a Tamron18-270 lens. They have been doing this since they were 9 and 12 years old. They are very careful and have never had any problems. I also have adults, who use my camera, put the strap around their necks. I make it a practice to use the strap around my neck too. The strap is like a seat belt in an automobile. You don't need it all of the time, but, when you do you need it badly!

Optech Sling Strap here too. Much easier on my neck, shoulders and back than the factory Nikon strap if I'm out for any length of time at all. As someone else mentioned, you can unclick it in a flash. I haven't bought the Velcro safety straps for it, even though the clip is made out of plastic, it seems plenty sturdy enough...

I use my default Nikon strap as an anti-thief device, nothing else. It is wrapped several times, tightly, around my wrist.

I do not see any point of having anything hanging around my neck, over my shoulder or on my hip.

I carry only one camera at anyone time, have a spare battery in a pant pocket and a couple of memory cards in my wallet. I do not carry any extra objective either.

If the job or projects ask for more, I use a backpack.

Tripod? Nope, just a mono-pod that is also a waking stick.

The result is that straps are well, not necessary at all, other than as mentioned in my first remark and for that Nikon's is just good enough.

Now, that is just me and the way I look at things. Minimalist in some ways, really complicated in others.

Well, Mr. PC... those plastic clips are notorious for breaking, so I would order some Velcro safety straps for it. You can use the camera with your Optech attached. Just put the velcro on the right side clip and not on the left side clip, so you can release part of the strap when using using the camera. That way the camera is always attached on one side...
just in case you have a plastic clip failure. 8-)

They are? Hmmmm.... must look into that.
Actually, I beg to differ. Been using Op/Tech straps (especially the bino-harness) for a long time now, never a problem.
Several other people I know use Op/Tech straps, no complaints from them about breaking clips, nor have I read reports of them breaking, on various forums. So, I wonder where that notoriety comes from????
