Subject Approaching -- Fast! Help with Nikon D300 settings

Yesterday evening I tried photographing my little puppy running toward me down a golf course fairway. Am having trouble keeping the subject in focus. Anyone out there who uses a Nikon D300 have any suggestions for settings for photographing moving objects coming TOWARD you? I had to use a wide aperture and consequently shallow depth of field because of the lighting at the time of evening. The camera is set at continuous al-servo with spot metering.

i sort of like the 4 feet off the ground , ears up , going as you can go feel of this--puppy energy nicely captured--maybe a little cropping?

There are several "menu" options that will affect results. AF-C mode Priority (IMO) should be set to "focus" setting and you need to select "OFF" for "Focus tracking with lock-on". Your manual will explain in a little more detail. You might also want to experiment with a different AF area mode. Gets a little complicated but worth the effort to understand the various options. Hope this helps.
