Should 'Weddings' be a sticky?

After all, the advice is always the same:

1 If you can possibly get out of it, DON'T DO IT!

2 If you can't get out of it, here is some advice

3 It is possible, but really, TRY TO GET OUT OF IT

4 Hysterical reactions from those who can't give any advice but feel well qualified to keep on screaming DON'T DO IT!

Cheers,

R.

A pro photographer that I know that is still in the photography business has already told me if I want to keep building up my portfolio to stay away from doing wedding when I advance since they are more and more of a hassle and less money in them now thanks to digital.

Great idea. It's all been said before, so let's make it a permanent fixture here.

As a matter of fact, we could have set answers for many common questions - diff bewteen DX/FX, etc.

quote=Roger Hicks After all, the advice is always... (show quote)

Difference between DX and FX one starts with a D the other with an F...joke...in case someone thinks it true...this is only a joke...

If I had the choice of doing a wedding or a football game I would take the wedding anytine. Why do folks that never do weddings or have done one and not done the study and planning that it takes also say Don't do it. I say try it you may like it.

As a Wedding photographer I can tell you thatt here is so much stress involved in the pre meetings with the prospective bride and groom and her parents. Then starting the day at her house, and after your key shots following the limo to the church. Rush back to find the priest .Introduce yourself .If you haven't shot there before and ask what photograhs that he will allow during the ceremony. Again moving to the back of the church and finding the BM and groom. After those key shots rushing to the front of the church to catch the Bride's father and the bride egrising the limo(if they have one) Quickly explain to the bridal party your plan to photographing each one as they enter the church to walk the isle with thier respective escorts
. Getiing each set of parents as they do the samething ,and then the bride and her dad.
Getiing those shots plus the dad giving the bride away and the key shots either during the ceremony or staged after the ceremony are only just the beginning.
After all this you have your formal shooting session and after this may or may not include the receiving line.
After this you must rush to the reception and take the required shots if they booked for a full days shoot.
Let me tell you that you still have post processing and another meeting with the newlyweds to determine which photo enlargements they would like in thier wedding album.
Wait for the ordered albums to arive at your studio and proof them.
Now another phone call to the bride and groom .Finally the last meeting with the bride and groom to deliver thier finished albums.
You must add up all your times plus that of your assistant. Now add in albums and processing fees.Gas and toals if they apply, plus wear on your equipment. Not even mentioning theft thereof.(seperate insurance on your equipment is a required expense)
The rest is called a profit.
"It's not just a job it's drama personified!" 8-)

I have several weddings to my credit with several more booked to date. I do not make a living shooting photos. In my limited wedding experience, I have found most events are not demanding the formality I expected. There are basic rules for all weddings, if you keep away from them how else will you learn? You should expect stress as long as it does not overwhelm. Stress keeps you sharp and focused. If it is too much, you may be in the wrong field of photography. Just sayin'.
