I mainly shoot sport pics and I currently have a Canon 30D. It has been a great camera. Just ready for an upgrade. I have been going back and forth with the Canon 70D and the Canon 7. Any advise as to which would take the best sport/action photo's?

Thanks in advance,
grannyd

Welcome to the discussion. The 7D provides a fast frames per second as well as a more advanced focus system and rugged body. The 70D represents Canon's newest technology at the sensor level. If you're looking at the 7D, look only for a used or refurbished model as this camera is about 4-years old and the new prices haven't come down far enough (my opinion). Or, wait until the replacement for the 7D is announced by Canon and check the specs and pricing to decide what you want and can afford, if working with a budget.

D, welcome to the Hog!
If you are mainly shooting sports, I would go with a used 7d. Why?
Sports is all about focus and usually fairly close-up, or should be.
The 70 has a lot of new tech, that won't help you shoot sports.
Both cameras use the exact same focus system, and the 70 doesn't use it any better, and the 7?still cranks out one more fps.
The 7 has less pix, but at close range you'll never see that.
The 7 has a semi-pro body, the 70 is a consumer camera. Because of that, the 7 has 150k shutter. Even a used one with 50k actuations, it still has the same life in it as the 70 and the 7 has better weather sealing.
If you where doing primarily landscape and portraits, I'd say the 70.
Use the extra money to get a 2.8 zoom, as only a 2.8 will exploit that super-sensitive center point.
Just my 2 cents. ;-)
Again, welcome and good luck!

CHG, I agree 99%, but only because the two cameras have the exact same focus system.
The 70 has a single newer processor, and the 7 has older but duel processors.
At one more fps, it's NOT a wash. ;-)

For fast action subjects such as sports, go with the 7D.

SharpShooter - I didn't realize they're the same AF system ... I see now I misread the spec and was thinking the 70D was at 9 focus points rather than the same 19 as the 7D. I hadn't thought too about the higher shutter life rating for the 7D ...

grannyd - A summary of the technical specs can be found at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Canon_EOS_digital_cameras

How urgently do you want to upgrade? If a Canon 7D Mark II is going to happen this year, there's a good chance it would be announced in September, perhaps during Photokina (9/16-21), and available for holiday shoppers. If it has some of the AF improvements of the 1DX, I think it would be a clear winner over either the 70D or the 7D. It will be more expensive, though, probably as much as the other two combined. Just a possible option to be aware of.

Ask and you shall receive! Thanks for the warm welcome. And, thanks for the feedback.

The 70D has 20 pixels and the 7 has 18 pixels, how much of a difference will this make?

I was cleaning the eye piece on my 30D and it push in and is stuck that way. So, I am unable to use it. Still a great camera just would rather put the $200 (+) just to send it in, then what ever the labor would be, towards a new camera.

And, I do have tamron 70-200mm F/2.8 and I absolutely love it.

I think the difference between 18 and 20 megapixels is completely insignificant. It is the difference between making a 20x30" print and a 21x31" print. If a print was hanging, I wouldn't know which size it was. :-)

It sounds like you can't really wait. Good luck with a "new" camera.

Every few months there have been rumors about an impending 7D mark II. The latest ones from a few months ago indicated that there would be an announcement in August. Since then I'm not aware of any other rumors. If it was going to be annouced in a couple of weeks we would have heard something by now, I would think. The 7D will be 5 years old at the beginning of September. That's practically ancient in digital terms. The only reason its still a practical choice for some people is because it was so advanced when it was introduced. Frankly I'm starting to doubt a Mark II version will ever be introduced.

Don't mean to be nitpicky, but you've made the same error three times so I thought I should mention it. It the Canon 7D, not 7.

I have the 70D and it is a great camera. It has 7fps vs 8fps on the 7D. But it has a great video and very quick Live View. It is rugged and is 20.2 mps vs 18 for the 7D.

I shoot sports about 90 percent of the time, football. soccer. basketball, lacrosse, etc. I have and use both the 7D and 70D, sometimes during the same game with different lenses mounted. Both are excellent and I never think about which camera took which photo. The advice about getting a used or refurbished 7D was good as that model is due to be replaced (or discontinued). Both are good at higher ISO (indoor gyms and night games) but I think the 7D is a bit better at ISO 3200 and above, if you are ever forced to go that high due to lighting conditions.
