I need to change a file type from jpg to a word document. Does anyone know of an easy way to do this in PS5? I've tried to get the answer from adobe, but have yet to see a tutorial on it.
THANKS!

I use Photoshop 5.0 amongst other software, and in almost all of them a JPG file can be changed to PDF with the FILE tab, then go to SAVE AS and select PDF. Simplest way I know of.
Word can handle jpg files directly. Just choose "insert", "picture", "from file" and then select your jpg file.
Open up M$ Word or open office editor insert a picture. another alternative is a free program "CutePDF", this will set up a printer. Now you can print to the cute PDF printer from any application and the result is a PDF document.

wschubert's answer was on the money. If you insert the picture directly, Word does strange things to it, and embeds an image in the file. Alternatively, you can check the box that says Link to File, which uses the original image file.
Word is awful if you're trying to do decent page layout, but the good stuff like QuarkXpress and InDesign are expensive beasts. Doing page layout in Word is like performing brain surgery with an axe.

Jpeg files and Word files are two different types. You can not change a jpeg file to a Word file. The extensions are not equal. However, as one poster wrote you can save a jpeg file as a pdf file and you can insert an image (jpeg file) into a Word document but when it is saved it will still be a Word document.

Word started out as a simple word processing program. Word 2007 and 2010 are actually extremely powerful page layout programs now, but as with anything you're not familiar with, there is a learning curve involved.
I thank everyone for your contribution!! It's time to tell you what I'm trying to do, because I'm still not getting any where quick with this project!
Another family member and I are writing a book about hints we have found down through the years on cleaning. It's a simple book, just mostly for our children and GRANDS, and it's mostly Green, meaning most of these items we use are natural and non-toxic. I'm also including some simple first aid items. My job is to illustrate it with my pictures, and publish. So, I've taken the images, and now I'm having difficulty getting them as I want. I'd like to have the background image, which I've much brightened, etc. in the background, and place the type on top. Have been unable to do this, unless done in PS, and I don't want to have to re-type the entire thing. Microsoft Works is what I have on my laptop, and it's not user friendly......but it is possible to insert an image, if the image is the correct size, but then I've had problems getting the shot placed (for smaller than page-sized images), and the page accepting type as well.
So, after struggling with this yesterday for quite a while, I'm thinking maybe I need a book publishing program, where the file types are not so stand-offish toward each other.
Any suggestions? I want to put background pictures, very lightly on all pages, and on some of those type on top, and other pages enter smaller pictures and do typing either above or below the smaller images. I've never written a book before, and it's sort of like writing a child's book, as far as the illustrations go.
Thanks ahead of time for your input!

any of the popular book creating companies will work for you--- I usually use apples, have tried Shutterfly and 4ever books--- all work nicely.
Thanks JennT. Some of those you have to download onto their website, and I was hoping to avoid that.

once you have printed the book (received it) you can delete from their webistes

You might try downloading OpenOffice (an open source and free - donations accepted - software suite similar to MS Office). The "Writer" part of this suite is like MS Word and should be hel;pful in solving your problem. Once you insert an image to the document, right click on that image and change the "Wrap" format to the format which works best for your image. As an example you can have text "Wrap" to the left or right of the image or even through the image. I use OpenOffice -
www.openoffice.org - exclusively and have for over 6 years. It's great. Hope this helps.

If you are used to Word, you might take a look at Microsoft Publisher. It is a part of Microsoft Office Professional. I use it quite a bit to publish calendars, business cards, gift cards. postcards, brochures and flyers of all sorts.

That's all stuff that I used to do for a living 20 years ago, and using Word for DOS and succeeding versions up to Word 2000.
Word 2003, 2007, and 2010 are much more powerful. You just have to know how to use Word.
I'd love to help you because that would allow me to explore Word 2010 for doing a project of my own that's been on my plate for a couple of years. No charge! Free! Etc....
Call, email me, or send me a private message. I'm sure I can get you where you want to go.
