iPhoto - How do you like it?

IPhoto came loaded on my Mac computer. I've tried different programs for editing photos but back keep going back to iPhoto. I love it!

As far as ease of use, it is second to none! The results I get are equal or better than any other program I've tried. Unless you want to get very technical and do detailed work I don't think you can beat iPhoto.

I'd love to hear a few opinions :)

I tried it for a few minutes and then gave up on it. It's not for serious work.

An excellent program for the home photographer but if you want to do any serious work you need better software. There are free programs out there that even an amateur can take advantage of and learn. There is substantial difference between iPhoto and the professional level programs.

Unfortunately Apple has discontinued supporting iPhoto (and I might as well deal another blow while I am at) and they discontinued Aperture as well. I know this is a bit of shock, just take deep and slow breathes in and out. There you go, try to remain calm everything will be ok. Once you have calmed down you can begin the search for a new editing program. The nice folks here on UHH can help you do that. I will get started by suggesting Lightroom5 and or Photoshop Elements12. Lightroom5 is a great editor and also organizes your images(it does a lot more, but I don't want to be writing for days). Elements allows you to do layers so you can have better control on your editing. The folks here will help you with other editing programs. Good luck, God speed and happy editing.

Apple is not going to make either iPhoto or Aperture go away. They simply are not going to develop them any further. They will continue to offer support for both. The new Photo supposedly will offer tie-ins for both iPhoto and Aperture. Keep in mind that both are designed for photographers who want a management type, data-based program, not something that will allow complete "make-overs" of photographs. Apple supports the idea that the camera takes the photo, the computer stores it.

Since Apple is no longer going to develop Aperture can you use the newest version of Aperture for the new Sony A6000 shooting in RAW? Apple's website does not list the Sony A6000 among the cameras that can use Aperture for photos shot in RAW.

Perhaps that's one of the main reasons I like iPhoto!?? I don't want a complete "make-over". I want my photos to look like photos and NOT a painting or drawing.

I've seen plenty of photos that have been edited and end up looking like a painting or drawing. Some people love these and go on and on about them. NOT me!

A little cropping, saturation, exposure and sharpness is usually plenty for me. I guess it boils not to personnel opinion and preference as to the look you're after. :)

In the mean time, will those programs not still work? I've never needed to use support for an editing prog - except to update a camera /lens combo in DXO

Years ago I had a Power G4 Mac, it had an early version of I Photo. I thought it was great, and as I could not afford to keep two computers going I trimmed down to just a PC as my Mac deteriorated. But I never got the color back into my photos without it, they were more saturated I would say, but just upping the saturation on a PC in Photoshop, etc. never seemed to equal what I can only say was an 'aesthetic' quality. Ever since, my photos have seemed a little drab without I Photo's various controls, I remember some were like a graphic equalizer I never found anywhere else.

I use it most of the time and does for me all I want. Also easy to use.
Guess it all depends on what you think your needs are.

I just purchased a Mac book Air, and I too, enjoy playing with IPhoto, as well as IMovie, I really have had very litlle Mac experience, as so I figured out alot of the steps needed to create a IMovie Trailer useing my home vido clips, and I must say they are quite entertaining...........

I like it but use Aperture more. Apple is discontinuing iPhoto and Aperture but will update Aperture one more time in the next year. The new program looks like a combined iPhoto and Aperture so I don't think we need to get too concerned.

I really do not like iPhoto myself. I find it a bit awkward. Maybe its just because I dont know how to use it very well. Question though: Is there a way to load your photos onto iTunes without using iPhoto?
