Where do you store your images.? In your desk top or in a external hard drive.
I was running out of memory so I moved 200gb of images into my passport. Left the folders that I'm still working on in the mainframe.

Right now they are stored on the desktop because it has a 1TB hard drive. There is a course an external hard drive that is backing up the desktop. Eventually if the amount of pictures get too big I will probably keep them on an external hard drive.

PC's Hard drive, Netwaok attached storage unit and DVDs. SyncBack is your friend (2brightsparks.com), it automates backups across the drives.

Luckily, a good portion of my images are stored on black and white film archivally processed. Were I to have shot all those film frames digitally, I would need about 10,000 terabytes or so of hard drives to store it all. Maybe three times that. I have a LOT of 4x5, 6x6cm, and millions of 35mm frames.

My digital work is stored on many hard drives (today, all 3TB drives) and now, only Blu-Ray disc, as its chemistry is MUCH more stable than anything CD or DVD before it. That said, I have thousands of burnt CDs and DVDs, but burned correctly. If you burn any CD or DVD faster than 4x, make SURE you have a real hard drive or thumb drive backup as well. Burning fast always guarantees short term storage which will be lost forever in a few years or less. I have 25 year old CDs which still read fine because I follow the burn slow (1x speed is best,) use best quality media, and use a good quality burner routine. Before I threw out my Dell, I stopped the stupid effort to burn any CD or DVD on it. I paid for software which could NOT be made to burn correctly. I had no need for ephemeral discs.

PC users should take the advice of the PC Authorities, which, years ago stated no important data should be stored on CDs or DVDs. This is because the entire PC industry got speed crazy with no understanding of its effect on archival nature.

Both. I have all my pics on the hard drive of my desktop and have them copied to my "Seagate" external drive. I back them up at least once a week in case something should happen, like my old "Western Digital" hard drive crashing on me.

i use a hot swap as a slave drive method and have 4 2TB drives one for all my photos and the others for movies and so on , and when not in use i put them in a magnetic proof box to protect them and lock it to keep out the snoops :)

On a second -D:- hard drive - 1.5 TB. I keep all my personal stuff off the C: drive and I back up my Download and Work areas to DVDs and Carbonite.

I really don't see the logic behind having an externally powered hard drive, if there is available space and power within the system. I guess I just don't have to need to move my drive to other systems, that frequently. I say this with over 45 years of carrier computer maintenance. Old Air Force teaching - KISS...

If you don't have an off site storage solution, you are still vulnerable to data loss. No matter how many burnt disc, hard drives etc that you have.

That said, someone like PhotoArtsLA who probably has more than most, needs a Fort Knox equivalent for storage. A collection like that is priceless and could never be replaced.

I believe that everyone here collection is priceless. I sure would hate to lose mine.
One of my friends doesn't back anything up. I asked him how he would feel if he lost it all. His answer was he didn't care. If I was him I think I would find another hobby.

I agree and didn't mean to imply that anyone else's collection wasn't equally important, they surely are. The only reason I referred to PhotoArtsLA is because of the vastness of his collection. Not necessarily of any more importance...my bad!

Wow, I almost wish I could think like your friend. (I live at home and share a computer with my family) About a year and a half ago I started telling them we needed to invest in an external hard drive incase anything happened. Our computer was almost seven years old at that time. Well it got a virus and we had to take it to our computer guy. Next thing we know he is calling saying that the hard drive is gone and it won't turn on. I freaked out because it had all my pics (only 2500 at that time) on it. He finally was able to get it up one last time and copy everything to a hard drive for us. Since then we have it backed up and I am still afraid of losing stuff.

This is exactly why OFF SITE storage is better than an external disk drive and exactly why you need to store your personal information on a drive (internal or external) other than where your system and programs are stored. Most systems beat the daylights out of the C: drive, seeking program info, etc. The drives are much, much better now than when I started working on hard drives (1964) but, still can crash, still can be clobbered, can still be infected with a virus. I don't work for Carbonite, but use them. They are not the fastest, but the price is right and the protection is great.

I have two Seagate USB hard drives that I use. They are both 1TB hard drives that cost me $50/$60 each. Think I paid 50 for one and 60 for the other at different times from Fry's.

I keep my pictures on my imac. When I get enough pictures to fill a CD I burn them, but I back up everything on a 2TB external hard drive. My HD is a G-drive, and I really like it and trust it.
