On a D800 using back button focus, If I use my Nikon MC-36A cable release do I have to set my settings back to original settings? Or can I use my cable with back button focus?

I think a test run to try it out will answer your question faster...

yes. But I wanted to hear from people who have this set up and how they use it.

I am trying to figure out why you would be interested in the combo. BBF is usually used hand held to re-compose. A cabled remote is almost always used when on a tripod. I don't consider them compatible issues myself.

I'd have to go set it up to check...but then you could do that. I THINK you need to have the shutter button focus active.

So what your saying is if I go and put my camera on a tripod, and use a cable release does it override the settings?
Do I need to switch it back when I go from tripod to just hand held back button focus?

I could try that and tell you or you could check it out yourself.

My Canon T3i operates in such a fashion. I use BBF even on a tripod and the remote fires the lens. I can also use a half-depress to focus and then complete the depression to activate the shutter.

You must have a different T31 than me. With the back focus button turned on in the Functions menu, I can half press the cable release button and nothing happens no auto focus, completely pressing the button will take a picture but not focused. I turn off the back button focus then half pressing the cable release will let the camera auto focus and a full press will take the picture. You can as you say use the back focus button to focus and then use the cable release to take the picture.

No problems. Back button focus and then shutter release with either the cable or exposure button.

Yes you do have to have the shutter button focus active. I did a shoot this past weekend using my 500 mm lens on a tripod with cable release. I forgot to reprogram my buttons and missed several shots until I reset it. That's on my D7100.

I think I know what you are asking, that is: "If I turn the shutter release focus off does the remote activate the focus or do I have to use the back button?" You have to use the back button.
