Love this site and check it every morning. Have learned a lot from great questions and great answers.
Getting back into photograph after a few years away. Picked up the Canon 70D and have the two L lens 2.8f 24-70 and 4f 70-200 the first versions.
What to buy a tripod and head. Would like to spend $300-400 for both.
Three questions that I would be interested in your thoughts:

(1) Which is better Gitzo, Manfrotto or Induro?
(2) Ball head vs pan tilt?
(3) Carbon fiber vs aluminum?

I will be using the tripod for landscapes mostly.

Any examples of tripod or heads that would work in this price range would be appreciated. Thanks.

If 300 to 400 dollars is your ballpark, kiss off the idea of a Gitzo. Not familiar with Induro, although they can be quite pricy. That brings us to Manfrotto tripods, originally marketed as Bogen tripods. I've happily used Manfrottos under both names for 35 years.

As for carbon fiber, for the additional expense over aluminum, you get a lighter tripod and some makers claim a stiffer tripod. Manfrottos are generally worth their cost in either version.

As for tripod heads, you have many good choices, including Manfrotto. I've used a solid ball head from Manfrotto, and had solid support.

Bottom line, get the best tripod you can for the money you want to spend and go the carbon fiber route if lightness is a big factor.

Check out the Manfrotto 055xProB with a 498RC4 ball head. Real quality at a reasonable price. If you want less weight get the carbon fiber model pod.

You want solid support, and the above rig is.

i have an induro at413, it's heavy duty and well built. it's also heavy, but that's ok, cause the farthest i carry it is less than 20 feet. it's around 220 as i recall, comes with case and bag of tools, and the sharp stick in the ground thing for the feet also in the tool bag. i got it cause it was weight rated where i wanted to be, and with a gimbal on it is the right height for me. i'm 6'5". had a big adorama coupon because i bought a d610 from them, was shipped for about 150 bucks

The problem costwise is that the cheapest tripod is the Induro Carbon 8X CT014 Tripod at $300 and $345 more for the BH-40 pro head. A total of 645 bucks.

Everyone so far has given you their recommendation on a tripod. I will not do so.
I will advise is that what you select (tripod, ball head/pan) be capable of supporting one and a half to twice the total weight of your camera and your heaviest lens. Do take into consideration your possible future purchases.

Good advice.

Given the equipment you have and that you want to shoot landscapes, you do not have to spend more than $100 or so. Landscapes do not move and they are generally at infinity. You barely need a tripod for that unless you are shooting panoramas, sunrises or sunsets. Save your money and buy an Expodisc for improving your color balance.

I have an Alta 233AO. It is the lightest and most stable tripod I have ever owned. In fact, I cannot believe how rock solid it is, even with the center post all the way up. You will find plenty other tripods in this price range.

excellent question, I personally use a Benro carbon fibre tripod
its very high quality, attracted me in the first place, and its the only tripod, thiat I know of, that can instantly convert to a Monopod, or if necessary a walking stick!!!..........
I feel its head and shoulders above anything else out there!!

Have used Manfroto, RRS and Acraech. Like Acratech the best.

$300 - $400 is going to greatly limit your choice; you can get a tripod and head but I suggest the quality may not be what you are hoping(?) for.

I just bought an induro AT214 and a BHL1 ball head. I love it. Used it while on vacation at the beach and it performed great. My heaviest rig was a canon 1D with 100-400 lens.

In your price range, I would suggest a Vanguard 263AT with a BBH 100 or BBH200 Both heads use Arca compatible mounting plates..I have this tripod with the GH200 pistol grip, but it does have some limitations. The 2 BBH heads also have a self leveling feature..All good value for what you are looking for..
These are sold by Amazon, B&H, and Adorama..All with GREAT service, and have this tripod/head combo within your price range..
Good luck!

Eddie
