Welcome to the hog -

The folks here have lots of good advice and a couple of days of experience and are willing share what they can - the more specific in what you ask will get more details in the answers

A couple of things to help you out -
First - Question that have details will allow us to respond with more useful information.

Second - A little research will help guide you...
Google can provide you with a lot of info and let you narrow down your questions...
The search link at the top of this page will let you search the forum - use advanced and select "sort to show most recent topics first".

This is the detail we are looking for to give you a reasonable answer...
What is your budget?
What is your focus (landscape, nature, sports, stars, water, people, etc...)?
What is your goal (just to enjoy and share, learn more, get critiques, become a professional)?

I've included some links below that will hopefully point you in the right direction...

Pixel count - lots of info out there on this subject...
Basically, the higher the pixel count, the larger the print you can produce.
To get more in-depth knowledge - check out the links in the Tutorial section of the Photo Start Sheet.

Photo Start Sheet - links to get you started...
http://www.photostartsheet.com/

To give you a quick review and comparison of cameras - use this site: http://snapsort.com/compare

Shopping - These sites are pretty popular with the members:
B&H: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/
Adorama: http://www.adorama.com/
Cameta: http://www.cameta.com/

Stay away from gray market items (non-USA) -
Here is a decent article by Nikon on gray market:
http://nikonrumors.com/2014/07/08/nikon-d800e-for-2399-99-on-ebay.aspx/

Hope this helps...

I would say the "comparable Nikon" is the D3200. Both are excellent. I have helped two friends get the D3100, both are very happy with them two years later.

Welcome to UHH. Ametha is correct. A Nikon D3200 would be very good and should hold you a while. B&H Photo or Adorama will be good places to shop. They ship fast and you don't pay taxes. Good luck.

Welcome to this community !
And altho I'm quoting the first reply your post elicited, I will advise you to thoroughly read and digest the second response. Your question is not anywhere as straightforward as you likely expected !
But I will say that altho you should also expect many replies extolling P&S and mirrorless outfits, it seems you have already decided to start in the dSLR direction (loud applause in the background here).
I own or have owned (d)SLRs from Canon and Nikon and Olympus and Pentax (the latter is my current system)over the years. The manufacturer of the device is nowhere near as important as the human using that camera.
Having thus asked you to de-emphasize the nameplate on the hardware, I will add my personal (and biased of course) suggestion that you expand your selection to other companies including Sony and Pentax in addition to Canon and Nikon. Rabid fans of the latter two predominate here on this site - beware! - thus I will duck as I quickly suggest you look at the Pentax K50 and K30. Pentax SLR's tend to be lighter and smaller and less expensive than comparable Canikon cameras - AND are weather-resistant - which IMHO is huge.

I had a T3i prior to upgrading to a 70D. In some ways I still miss my T3i as I had taken some incredible pictures with it.

Your intimating about not paying sales tax is incorrect Dave. If you live in a state that has one of their shipping or office locations then you will pay sales tax. That's the way the law now reads. I think Amazon is charging tax now to almost all sales since they have locations all over the country.

Hi Gert, don't restrict your choice to just these two makes, there are several other makers which are just as good if not better than the two makes you are considering.
Olympus OM or Pen and Panasonic cameras should be considered, their image quality is excellent and you could save yourself a small fortune. Nikon and Canon users can be very defensive about their choice so bear this in mind when reading their posts.
I am certain any make you choose will be OK, all the popular makes are very good cameras.
John.

In addition to this, if the shipper does not charge a sales tax, You are required to pay the tax anyway. You are supposed to file this on your state form. Very few people actually do this but it still is technically necessary.
