How important is a lens hood on a ultra wide angle lens

How can you trust the advice of a guy that says tripods are now obsolete? It's hard to make a more ignorant statement about photography. Every single one of the top landscape shooters in the world use tripods; I guess they make Ken 'more credible' too.
