Photomatix Question and HDR

I'm a little confused. I have Photomatix Essentials and when I combine 3 photos for an HDR it sometimes says "tonemapped" or "fused". How do I control what I get or what process is used and what is the difference? If you look at my Flickr account you can find some landscapes that have the 2 processes. I don't think I had any control over them. I would like a true HDR sometimes and don't know exactly how to accomplish that with Photomatix. My guess is it's user error. Thanks for any insights.

I have Photomatix Pro, and I have the option to do tonemapped or fused. In general, fuse produces more intense effects.

Stick with tonemapped until you are comfortable. Go to Trey Radcliffe's Stuck in Customs blog and download his Photomatix plugins.

Go to the Photomatix web site and they have videos on how to use it and what most of those things do.

I did that prior to asking the question here. It doesn't explain what the difference is or how to choose one over the other.
