Lightroom 5 Question

Just finishing a trip to and through Canada and up to Anchorage AK. Have taken about 600 photos all JPEG except those taken in Alaska which were shot in RAW (my first time doing so). My question is --- can I upload all the pics to Lightroom at once or must I do separate downloads for the RAW shots? All 600 photos are on a 32 Meg SD card. In advance thank you for your help.

This is actually a question I can answer and that does not happen too often around here. You can upload them all at once.
Enjoy Alaska! It is the place I call home, just wished I was up there.

Do them all at once, check the import screen and make sure that you have set it up properly before hitting the Import button.

If you are not used to LR, just do a few at first, track what is happening and make sure they are doing what you want them to do.

I shoot in RAW+JPG most of the time and LR is smart enough to only bring in the RAW files. Some burst mode shots of birds and sports are best done in JPG only, and if they're are only JPG version of shots, it knows to upload those as well.

I should have mentioned that if you want to see the jpgs and raw files separately in LR you should ensure your preferences are set up:
Menu > Edit > Preferences > General Tab > Import Options
"Treat jpg files next to raw files as separate photos" this option should be checked.

Make sure Lightroom import is set to copy, not move. If the download fails for some reason you don't want to find you deleted all your images from the SD card.

I guess I haven't checked since version 3 but LR doesn't (or didn't) allow the "Move" option when importing from external drives/cards

What if you use one card for RAW and the other for JPEG (D800 in this instance) When you import them, will LR5 place them together as they should have the same file name with different extensions. Or would it be better to import to separate folders, one for RAW and another for JPEG?

Workflow should be based on what is being done to the images. Suppose you shot the raw + Jpeg so that you would have a "target" to strive for in your retouching, then you should import all the files together so you can compare them side by side. On the other hand if one type is a failsafe, then import into separate folders. It really does not matter, if you have developed a degree of competence with the filters, collections and/or smart collections, images can be sorted almost instantly even if ALL images are just dumped into one folder. (I don't advocate 10,000 photos in one folder, but Lightroom would not care, it can handle that scenario).

Thanks Searcher.

Can this be done from separate cards?

Oh yes, if your import screen is set up for import into date folders it will happen automatically. If not, you can set the destination panel or if they end up in different folders, you can highlight one set (in the library) and drag them in bulk to where they need to be.

Again, thank you for the assistance

I'm not entirely sure either one way or the other. I'm not at home right now and I can't check. I do recall earlier threads where people lost images from the SD card during import. While LR won't default to move during import I wonder if a user could inadvertently set it to do so. I thought I would mention it just in case.

It really doesn't matter. When I import I create a folder using the date. I then add info to the name so I know different things, such as 07-13-5D-500mm. I can now add any photo I want to that folder.

Sense you are importing from different cards you could put the photos where ever you want to.
