I know this topic has been discussed but after endless research I have narrowed down my choices to a) Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX300 or b) Fujifilm Finepix HS50EXR. Any advice? I need a viewfinder and the best resolution I can get for the price. They are both in the $350 range. If you have one of these and either like or dislike any of the features please let me know. I have a Nikon 7000 and hate to sacrifice quality but sometimes I just need to carry something smaller. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Oooh no! I love my 7000. Sometimes I just want to take something smaller without all the lenses.

In my opinion the Sony would be a better choice, smaller, lighter, longer zoom and shoots faster.

Hi, I saw your post...I have the HX300, a newer version with better image processor is available (HX400) but is in the $400 price range. I'll be back later today and give you more of my thoughts. My wife is singing at a funeral in a little while, so I got to go. In the meantime, I'll leave you with this slideshow I took with the HX300 a couple weeks ago for you to peruse though. The photos advance automatically. Also click the view full screen icon at lower right for best viewing experience. Now most of these where taken with camera on Auto (except night shots and a few HDR's). I'll be back later.

ssohl, if you have a Flickr account you can type in the make and model of each of those cameras to view the pics that have been taken from them and posted. That will give you an idea of the capabilities of each camera. 2 things I like about the Fuji is it's fully articulating back screen and manual focus/zoom ring on the lens. Yet, the Sony "seems" to have a better lens quality. The link to James56 pics are amazing to say the least, you are right they look beautiful. But take moment and review the cameras images on Flickr. OH I also forgot to mention that the Sony does not have Raw capabilities where as the Fuji does, if that's important to you.

P.S. James56 might just have won me over to the Sony :)

I really like my Canon SX50, but if I was going to switch to one of the models you are looking at I would have to go with the Fuji.

For me there are 2 important items lacking on the Sony: Hot Shoe for external flash and the LCD only tilts (Fuji & Canon are fully articulating).

Other than that they are all very nice cameras!!

Thanks Warrior, I will check it out. I actually had a Nikon CoolPix before I got my first dslr but I'm sure the newer ones are a lot better.

If you want small, go small. Go for an Rx100 mk1 or canon s110 or 120. If I had to pick between the two you mentioned, I'd go for the Fuji.

The Sony HX300 also has a manual focus/zoom ring on the lens. In AF mode, it works as a zoom; in MF mode it works as a focus ring.

I have the HX300 and I love it! I bought it for when I don't want to carry my A65 and for the 50x zoom ;). The pictures are sharp and clear and it's a lot lighter and easy to carry than my dslr. I seldom shoot raw even on my dslr so that's an non-issue as far as I'm concerned and I don't care that the LCD only tilts since I don't use it for anything but reviewing pictures and even then, I have it set to low resolution to save the battery. The only downside I've seen so far is the battery has to be charged in the camera...(yeppers, even Sony has a stinker of an idea every now and then  ). I haven't yet, but you can buy a third party charger and spare batteries.

Great shots!! I had it narrowed down to three when I bought my HX300...looks like I made the right choice! (Even though, at the time, it was based upon finding the HX300 at a really good price!)
