I put a new 32g card in my camera and after formatting I check to see how many images I could take.
The camera read the card as 24 g and 1200 shot were available. Is this correct.

IT seems fairly close as I get 620 shots on my 16gig cards. If you are careful and turn your camera off when not shooting you may well make your battery last out for 620 shots!

Why does a 32 g card read as a 24. Where are the other 8g?

Are you in Setup > Display card space to get this information? If you are then then the 24 refers to 24 MB which is the file size of each image. In my camera it reads
24M RAW 622Image and below that it tells me how much movie recording time there is. If I've got it wrong I apologise

My SanDisk Extreme PLUS 32GB card, formatted by the NEX-7 shows there's space for 1241 raw photos.
Mac's Disk Utility app says: Capacity = 31.92GB; Available = 31.83GB; Used = 74.4MB
NEX-7 > Display Card Space says "24M RAW 1241Image". I assume the camera assumes a RAW photo will use 24MB of memory. The "arw" file sizes of the downloaded photos on my computer vary. Most are between 24.8MB to 25.2MB. Also, additional memory is used for "housekeeping". Bottom line: The number of photos that can be stored by any camera on any memory card is a best-guess estimate.

thanks........i believe that the 24 refers to the mp of the camera and not the space.
This camera is great, but too many buttons.

Agree. Perhaps, there enough buttons, but many change what they do. Also, I have a hard time remembering that it's not a toy. If I want to take a good picture, I need the same attention to detail as I need with my fancy DSLR. Then, the results are amazing. :)
