What happens when shooting a wedding and the images get lost?

I met with a client yesterday. They said they were discoraged with professional photographers, because the photographer that shot their wedding, lost half of the pictures. Question: Is there an insurance policy that would cover the cost of such an incident?

Ya gotta feel for the guy but film must have been lost or ruined in the past, no?

Yes. The insurance is for the photographer in the event he or she is sued because of this.

However, you must be a member of the PPA and you are then covered by the indemnity trust. It is not REALLY insurance, but the effect is the same. It is a trust set up from member dues - one cannot be canceled as long as you are a member. It is NOT money paid to the client automatically - you must be sued for it.

This, as well as the $15,000 in equipment insurance, is reason enough to belong. Educational and copyright assistance are two more.

The insurance is preparation. Lawsuits won't recover the images either.

CaptainC, thanks for the information! That's a big help.

Ring, your right, but in today's world, we are a law suite happy society, as you well know. So being prepared is important.

Captain C is right on! PPA is a great organization. If you are ever in Atlanta, Ga. Be sure to visit their home office. It's downtown Atlanta. It is worth a visit to see the photographs that hang there. The road to acquiring the PPA Certification is well worth the effort. PPA is an international organization but there are Regional and State PPA organizations that offer a great deal of support for photographers at the local level. If you live in SC or nearby, our convention is Feb 4th in Columbia SC.

Our website ...info on the convention as well http://ppofsc.com/

Sure. You can register for just the sessions you want to attend. I think Saturday night is going to be a shootout. There will be backdrops, models, and lights set up....and photographers will be able to shoot form 7:00 to midnight (not too sure of the time) it will be a lot of fun getting to meet others and ....will be a learning process as well.

Find Jee Jee's Cowherd's number on the website and tell her Ed Overstreet sent you. You can join the association without being member of PPA...not too sure why but you can and a first year membership is 94.00. This will also get you into all of the 6 days of the convention.

As a matter of idle interest, what percentage of PPA members are outside the USA? What percentage outside the Americas in general?

This is not for a moment an attack on the PPA, about which I have heard almost nothing but good. But I have heard little but good of equivalent organizations in other countries, e.c. AoP, or whatever it's currently called.

Cheers,

R.

Insurance is a good idea, but I would also start training for a new field of endeavor, because if this happens more than once in a lifeltime you are going to be out of the wedding photography business.

Just as important: whatever the cause of the loss is, it must be tracked down and eliminated.

Ditto! I will be there all of Saturday but will not be staying overnight. I am 1 hour 15 minutes from Embassy Suites. I will not be able to attend much of the convention other than Saturday.

Roger I really do not know. When I attending classes in Atlanta, I would say 70 percent of the 100 or so students were from the states. But that really does not mean too much. Of the images hanging in the halls I will say a lot of those are from all points of the globe.

Nevada Chuck, thank goodness I don't do weddings. And, please don't discourage me, I'm just now entering the arena. I could use all the help I need. And I do appreciate your feed back!

Make sure you watch this video before shooting your first wedding http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciqSdgLh_1w

Besides the fall, he sure had a lot of nerve walking up the aisle during the ceremony and I guess firing flash....do not know that for sure it appears he is.
