Flash Not Working Correctly

I purchased a flash last week from Amozon for my D3100 ( not a Nikon Flash, Nikon just to expensive right now.) recevied it, attached to the camera and noticed that the ISO and fstop were not lighting up. Assuming the flash was defictive I return it and recevied a new one. Same problem. Called Polorid and they had no idea. Does anyone what the problem could be, is there any way to determine if it is the camera and/or the flash.
Thanks Mike.

I prefer to stick with the name brands, never a compatibility problem. Wolf Camera (Ritz) has the Nikon SB-400 flash for #119.99 with free shipping.

I understand the expense part, but when you use the manufacturer's stuff, it works. The capabilities of the Nikon flash system are worth saving up for.

I suggest that you try your flash on another similar or exact camera body, to see if problem repeats.

Nikon is famous for it's flash photography, it's what makes Nikon shine.

The SB400 is inexpensive and will work correctly on your D3100.

I can only echo the previous comments. I have another concern: given the circuitries in these small units (Yes you can incur a serious burn from them), I would never jeopardize my DSLR by sliding a Flash not designed by that manufacturer on the camera. Just my 2 pennies....

I see the Polaroid flash units do indicate they are specific to the camera and do say all the right things to indicate compatibility but apparently there is a difference between an $80 flash and the real deal at $300.
