Improvised Macro test with a bonus vistor

I put a 20mm extension tube on my Canon 24-105 F4L and was taking some pictures of this Purple/Violet Wood Sorrel(?) that grows in a pot in my yard when this little guy landed on the one I had focused on. Flower is just under 1/2 inch so bee/fly/??? is less than 1/4 inch. fairly sharp for hand held Did some PP in PSE12 via the Quick mode auto buttons and then cropped the living daylights out of it.

Any ideas besides use a tripod, use a remote release, buy a better lens for macro (like Sigma 180 f2.8, drooling and panting, don't look at me), hire someone who knows what they are doing to take the picture, etc. Comment anyway.

Not too shabby, considering your use of a zoom lens. I notice a bit of Chromatic Aberration in a few places, but objectionable.
Suggestions:
1.) Get out of Auto mode; you should make exposure decisions, not your camera.
2.) Lower ISO to 200 (-2 stops) and
3.) increase shutter duration to 1/200-sec (+2 stops), which is exact same exposure, but will reduce digital noise.
Exif info:
Camera Model: Canon EOS 6D
Lens: EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM
Image Date: 2014-07-04
Focal Length: 98mm
Aperture: f/13.0
Exposure Time: 0.0013 s (1/800-sec)
ISO equiv: 800
Exposure Bias: none
Metering Mode: Matrix
Exposure: program (Auto)
White Balance: Auto
Flash Fired: No

Looks good to me, Robert. An alternative to a tripod is a beanbag. Works great to stabilize camera for shots low to the ground. Still need a cable release though.

I have used bean bags, well a folded jacket, but this pot of wood sorrel is on a table with a lawn chair so the flowers are just below eye level. I am going to try moving the pot to the edge of the table, setting up a tripod so the camera is just an inch or two above the level of the flowers and using a remote trigger.

That will still leave the wind factor. Our house is on a north facing slope and most wind around here comes out of the NE. With our heat in So California it gets pretty strong going up slope. I guess if I got serious about outdoor flowers I would need one of those white translucent light tents. Don't think the family financial advisory council would go for that, this is already an expensive hobby.

Or you could build a wind box. :-D

Could use the box my new printer came in. Spray paint the inside, reinforce the corners and edges with duct tape, put the back to the wind and place the pot inside the box. Put a couple of bricks on tabs to hold the box in place. Should work.
