Stupid question maybe but here goes

Heading to the UK next month to shoot my neice's wedding. Making an exception cos even though they are such a pain in the **s (and back) I wanna try using my new toy.

Anyone tried bringing the Cotton Carrier Steady Shot through airport security? Or do I have to check it in? Im the kinda guy who has to shift things around between bags at the airport cos my bathroom scale never matches up.

Trust me Im tempted to wear the cc vest just so that dont count against the weight. but then maybe I look like a terrorist???

Given that the CC is relatively light and folds flat, I'd put it in your checked bag and then go through security with cargo pants (or a vest) stuffed with heavier gear -- if weight is a problem. Once on board you can put the gear into your carry-on.

Another reason to pack the CC is to avoid attracting the attention of security personnel. They tend to be paranoid to begin with, so why invite their attention?

Re the weight of your luggage, it pays, I think, to buy one of those digital luggage scales, then you'll know exactly what each piece weighs and how much you'll need to stuff on your person. Reduces the probability of airport drama. Try Magellan's; I got mine from them and it works very well.

You will NOT get that through security while wearing it. All strange metal objects that the TSA doesn't see very often (or ever) will be inspected especially on international flights.

It all depends on which TSA person you get & the location! Some are much more forgiving than others.
I use my vest when needed & haven't had trouble, it goes through the Xray easier than emptying pockets. It always pays to get through security early, especially if you carry the Cotton Carrier, in case you have to turn around & check it, you don't want to miss the flight.
Another option is to ship it, along with other non-critical gear, ahead of time so you don't have to carry it at all.

dont know what the cotton carrier weighs but I would pack it with checked baggage, if you are over by a pound dont think it is that big a problem

Tell that to Air France.

According to my experiences, you will also have problems, if you wear baggy clothing or a cargo vest.
Lay it all out in the bin at the TSA checkpoint and store it in the carryon after the TSA check. It helps if you have a second person preceding, who can keep an eye on the stuff in case you get delayed with wanding or what not.

It's a delay. How big a problem is a delay, once they've determined you're not a terrorist?

Cheers,

R.

Well... a kilo or two, anyway.

Many American travellers have a problem with European carriers, some of whom actually enforce checked baggage regulations. It's not 'all you can carry'. If your bags are inside gauge (linear dimensions), and you have only one bag, then weight is normally less of a problem as long as you aren't puffing, limping, grunting, etc. Go outside linear dimensions and get your carry-on weighed, and it can be a nasty business.

Cheers,

R.

it can be as short as 1 min. before someone sees a valuable item unattended and snags it. You are not allowed to go to your stuff while you are being wanded or whatever.

of course. You need to check the price of that and weigh your options.

I agree that they'd let you slide for a kilo or 2; sometimes a couple of pounds if you're lucky. I'm always careful about the linear dimensions and always stay underweight when leaving the US. It's coming home, after you've purchased what you've purchased that it becomes dicier. If my wife and I are both overweight, then we will shift stuff to one bag and pay for that only. (Use to be you could buy a bag overseas and check that though at no extra cost. But those days are long gone.) To be fair to Air France (which I like anyway) they don't seem to be any better or worse than other international carriers. Last time out this past Autumn was just my time to get unlucky.
