I recently got the new Canon 10-18 STM lens and it has a plastic mount. Is there any way to make this a metal mount? Thanks for input.
It's such an inexpensive lens, don't you imagine Canon would have done it in a metal mount for not too much more?
Just looked at a couple reviews and the specs. Lots of features for such an inexpensive lens.
Yeah, go figure. Being an STM lens it mates up perfectly with the SL-1. Excellent for pics but especially for video.

I personally would never knowingly purchase a lens with a plastic mount, and would be outraged if I got one by mistake, but in practice it may not be all that bad. Attach and remove carefully and deliberately (as I believe anyone who cares about their equipment should do anyway) and it should last for many years.
Certainly you might use a metal mount from another lens, adapter or extension tube, but in all probability would lose some lens functions and it may not be worth the trouble to do it yourself, or the expense of having it done.
If you often find yourself in situations where you cannot change lenses carefully, you may consider keeping it on one camera most of the time.
Just my humble opinion. :-)

Mike, Plastic is not all bad. I'm sure it's a form of carbon of some kind that's been molded.
Keep in mind that carbon absorbs vibration, and steel, just passes it on.
If you drop a lens from a height not high enough to damage the lens, but it lands on the mount, the steel mount lens I'm sure would be on its way to receive a new mount, the plastic one not.
Also, most with the Canon SL1 owners bought it for small and light, that's what that lens was designed to complement.
Just saying! ;-)

I have had my 50mm 1.8 canon for 10+ years. It has been changed from one camera to another many times and still works great. Not bad for a lens that I paid $80 for.
Guess I won't worry about the mount. Just be a little more careful. Thanks to all.
