I did a search, and there were a bunch of software related topics, but none of the topics were focused on moderately cheap software editing programs. If i had a budget of under $150, what would you recommened?

I have been playing with the free trial of lightroom and it seems pretty cool. I also have been using the included Windows Live Gallery program for simple straightening/contrast edits. Anyone use this?

Any recommendations?

I like Corel Paintshop Prox4. It is their latest and easiest re;ease. I originally had x2 and upgraded to x4 about a month ago. Paintshop will pretty much do just about everything Photoshop will at a fraction of the cost..Plus it is very user friendly and the help system and Tutorials are great. I believe it is on sale at Corel now.

Photoshop Elements is about half of your budget (or less).

While Elements is good and getting better,,,, PSP X-4 is already better!! It is about $50 on sale that leaves you enough to get Topaz Adjust to work some magic on the photos, it also is about $50... sorry, nothing left over for coffee.

Also there are some great freebees out there like the FastStone programs. PhotoShop has some free plugins you can down load,,sssshs,,, don't tell them,,, but they will work in PSP. Look up MathMap,, wild things!!!.. The photoextremist is a good site for techniques to boggle the mind. Subscribe to Giveawayoftheday.com and they some times have photo programs.

Sorry to buck the trend but Lightroom 3 is what I'd get.

I've used Gimp, PSP, Photoshop since v4, PSE 9, and 10 and IMHO Lightroom is of more use on a consistent basis.

PSP x4 and the Topaz add in look really great. I am using photoshop CS-2 and am not a super advanced user. Is there anything I would lose if I went to PSPx4 plus Topaz rather than upgrading to a more current version of Photoshop? The only add in I use frequently is wire worm to erase dog leashes.

Thanks

Photoshop Elements gets my vote. Also you might want to check out Paint.Net. It's free....Also, a lot of people like Gimp. It's also free.

With lightroom, can it automatically batch all your .NEF files to Jpeg where they will be sharper (I don't plan on editing after exporting to jpeg) ?
