Adobe DISCOUNTS on Student and Teacher Editions

Just got this in email from buy.com:

Generally, you have to prove you're a teacher or student (or have friends that are) and sometimes in a related field.
Even if you take a class, or one day seminar at a community college...you're a student. (try to provide proof before you take the class.)

Also, there's StudentDiscounts.com. I think there are slightly more relaxed requirements, but still good prices.

BEWARE: Read the fine print as to what a Student Edition is. Sometimes the programs have limitations that might not allow you to print without having some sort of watermark.

There! It's out there for you.

Read the fine print is correct! Autodesk's AutoCad program, student edition, is only good for 4 years. After that it rolls onto its back, points its feet in the air, curls its toes, and dies. They figure that by then you are hooked and will buy the full version--at better than $4.0k! The student version also prints an ugly outline around your work--reducing the available space for your drawing to an unreadable miniature.

That's funny! That's the one I bought from StudentDiscounts.com. I knew that it was a 4 year thing and about the printing. I took a beginner CAD course thinking it would be easy.

Anyhow, my PS7 was a Teacher edition I got when I was teaching computers. It was only missing the manuals.

I did warn people.

Still, not everyone is so mean. Some of the software with student discounts give you the full version--just at a lower (sometimes much lower) price. It is worth investigating, but still READ THE FINE PRINT!

I think that CAD is such an expensive program (I think the full version is around $600-800) that I think they're worried that someone would download a "student version" every for years @ $100 and come out ahead of the game.
I'm willing to bet that not all the student/teacher versions of other S/W are crippled like that.

Upgrades to student/teacher versions are not available however. So while you purhcase your software cheap, keep in mind the upgrade discount down the road does not apply. This is from another thread here on UHH.

There are ways around that, but if you really need the discounted software for your business or profession, when the expiration date rolls around, you should buy the full versions.

I got the student/teacher edition without any problems, and now it's mine for ever. I can upgrade it when new programs come out without a problem.

I have three children going to high school or jr. High all I had to do was select the school they go to and send a picture of their school ID to Adobe. It was easy.

I got this past summer CS5 extended version for $159.00 and Lightroom for $69.00. Lightroom and CS5 were both still at full price for everyone else when I got them.

Both my daughter enjoy getting on my computer and playing around with CS5. But clearly I'm the main user.

See? I said there were ways around the student/teacher requirement.

It was my impression (as pointed out by another member) that these were for students and teachers, not the relatives thereof. Just saying.
