LR, as it's commonly known, is a popular program for post processing. It has a lot of functionality and features, but MAY BE a bit overwhelming for a self-described 'newbie'. Depending on the type of post processing you do (if any) you may be better served with a less intimidating program like Picasa to start out with.

I think it is considered more of a digital darkroom software. Correct me if I am wrong.

I've been using it for almost two years, and also use Photoshop CS 5.5 with it, and love it. I do a lot of optimizing in it, besides using it to keep track of my photo library --- like it better than Bridge which is included with the Photoshop package.
If you get it, be prepared to spend some time learning it and exploring all of it's features.
I might add that a good book on the subject that can be found on Amazon.com would be a great help. Also there are some really good free instructional videos to be found on the internet.
