I started a Glamour/Boudoir photography business in Nov. I have a website and advertise on FaceBook, but need other outlets for getting the 'word' out to people. Two of the local papers went to my website before agreeing to advertise and now they won't do it because of the content. The one WEEKENDER (weekly) paper has done it but I've only got two calls from it. It attracts mainly young people looking for adventure on the weekend. I pd. $200 around Thanksgiving and got one call. I just pd. $100 last week and got one call. I just wanted advice/suggestions on where I should advertise with the longest amount of exposure. I have recently ordered two car magnets (I'm sure someone will steal those) and bought new business cards. I work at a hospital and every time I put a flyer up someone take is down.
Any suggestions from something that worked for you in your town please let me know. I live here in smalltown PA!!

just a thought or two: go visit bridal shops in your area - 2) see if you can get some word of mouth advertising 3) any community colleges or colleges in your area? Coffee shops for flyers? Talk to folks around town let them know what you are doing....

A friend did marketing campagin that she mailed postcards to everyhome in target market area. I know she purchased the mailing list, but I am unsure from where. If you like I can ask her and I will also ask her about the call back rate on that marketing plan for you.

postcards to every home. ANy idea what that would cost. I'd rather send to a select group. I'm sure I could buy a mailing list. Find out what you can and get back to me!
Thanks!

See doesn't send them to every home, she has a criteria set. Something like:

Newly married
Between the ages of x and y
Postal code
Home price

Getting the word out there is always a bear. Mailing lists are a cheap way of going. But ask yourself what did you do with the last post card you found in your mail. Just keep at it maybe offer to do it for free one day a week!

Good luck

some hair salons will do a package deals of getting your hair, makeup and Glamour shots. Check with some in your area. If they don't you may can offer a good deal where all parties will make out some. The big thing you get your name out. Also check for Pure Romance or Slumber party consultants in your area. They do all girl party (if you know what I mean), they get questions from time to time about pictures. The big thing is word of mouth and get your portfolio seen.

All good ideas. Yes, they have some girly parties here. I'll see if I can contact some and see if they could help me out with advertising! Maybe give the hostess a free session or a deep discount! Not a bad idea!!

community colleges or colleges in your area?

I bought an ad in a Dallas Community College newspaper and had no responses. I am a wedding photographer, but apparently those young girls were not getting married those months.

Just saw an AD on Group-on website for same kind of work you do, check it out. I guess they charge you if you get work. Also try thumbtecks.com you can advertise for free and they charge $5.00 per contact made.

When I started my business, I contacted some friends of all ages, and offered to do some portraits for free, just for the exposure. If they really liked them, which they all did, then I asked them to share them on their facebook page and tell their friends about me. They did and I did start getting calls and jobs. I think word of mouth is some of the best advertising! Good luck :)

I've done a lot of Boudoir photography and it can be a tough sell. Craigslist is a mine field at times but it is free, just don't post your phone number in the ad. You will get a lot of time wasters and ads flagged for no reason. I did do a lot of TF work to get started and that did get some other business. Social networking seems to be the new deal. Facebook is what a lot of folks are using. I would join a couple Model sites. Model Mayhem is the biggest and i'll say the best around. They have over 600,000 members. They do have some fairly strict requirements to get in, but it's free or you can ugrade. There are a lot more out there but the second one I use is One Model Place. They are a little easier to get in. Once your in them try contacting makeup artists. I like the idea of going to salons and offering packages...wish I thought of it two years ago... I've looked at some of your stuff and I like what you've done.

swabubin,
How far away are you to a fairly large to large city? There would surely be more businesses to network with in larger cities. Network with bridal shops, lingerie stores, doctors who specialize in beauty enhancements, clothing boutiques just for women (if you are able to advertise in any of these places, put a tasteful photo in an elegant frame on an easel and leave business cards). You can post yourself on a site called Model Mayhem for free, I believe, and that should get you some business (you can also include a link to your facebook page. This is actually a HUGE site and gets tons of hits every day. An advantage is that your port would be put in according to your zip code in Pennsylvania. If you haven't been to this site, go there...you'll see what I mean, it's easy to navigate. Go to: www.modelmayhem.com ). Hope this helps.

Talk to your local post office about every door direct mail (eddm). You don't need a special permit and you can send oversized postcards to up to 5000 targeted addresses for only 14 cents apiece. The local business center can guide you through the process, or you can create and produce the piece online.
