I am headed to Africa next month and find that I need to buy a vest to carry some of my lenses and stuff that won't fit into the 33 lb. weight limit of my baggage. The Canon 200-400 and tripod will use up a lot of that weight especially tucking in a camera body too. Now if only I didn't need the clothes! The extra 8 lb. carry on doesn't help much either with meds and such in it.
I would appreciate comments on which vests you have used to carry extra lenses and things including a Cannon 2.8 70-200 and a couple of smaller ones. There are no camera stores less than 2.5 hours to look at them and then VERY limited cheaper ones there.
Thanks in advance

Look on b&H photo they have many to choose from in different price ranges. I have one I ordered from them and love it. Mine is the lesser expensive Humvee brand, but it has lots of pockets in all sizes and I easily carry lenses and lots of other stuff too. Order a couple try them out and send back the ones you don't want!

I got a fishing vest at Dick's Sporting goods for about $30.00. It can hold extra batteries, memory cards and a couple of lens. I can fit a Nikkor 70-300mm with no problem.

Mine just arrived today. Ordered same size I usually wear and it appears to be fine.

I have used a number of vests over the years. There seem to be 'specialized' vests presumably made just for the photographer. I've found that standard fishing vests work just as well and are usually a lot cheaper...excuse me, more inexpensive.

I've also used, in the past, a 'safari jacket'. It had a lot of nice pockets and such for all kinds of equipment.

Domke Pro Photovest. Designed for what you will be doing. Fishing vests, I find, are too warm for use in the field.

You can get a jacket with zip-out sleeves; you may need it at night. Get tan, not black or OD (out of production, but occasionally available).

I would think about a backpack. If you have to carry lenses in vest pockets where will you put them when not wearing the vest or when traveling? There are many manufacturers supplying purpose built models. I took a Kata one to Tanzania & Uganda and it worked well

I've been using a Domke photo vest and camera bag for years. They are really rugged. The vest is ventilated too. I also have their jacket and you can remove the sleeves from it but it is not ventilated. It's loaded with pockets! Tiffen sells all Domke equipment at Tiffen.com I have the vest on in my photo.

For tBragg Guy, I went to Tanzania last year and had a blast. I had the weight limit as well for my packed bag, but could carry on a backpack and briefcase. You should check to see if this is okay. We could not take tripods, so I took a monopod, which I used very little, a bean bag was best. Not sure where you are going, but we had no stores any where close! Enjoy the trip and please post when you return. BTW, I have a HUMVEE vest and like it. Gary

Check out clicklite.com for some camera backpacks. Depends on how much equipment you want to carry and price, of course.

Look at a fly fishing vest, many many pockets and not expensive. Look at Cabela's and Bass Pro Shop
