Finally got out to practice

Following Douglass' advice I obtained a soft box. I got out and tried to find some critters to shoot. The best I located were some ants running up and down tree trunks. This is what I feel to be the best of what I got. I had to mess around with flash power and I think it was around 3/4 for this.
Is there an ideal time of day when bugs are slower moving? These guys were tough to keep up with.

Overall illumination looks good. Couple of hot spots that can be addressed with flash output level and making sure the diffuser is "puffed" out - fully extended from the flash head and not folded close to it. Focus is off a tad but close. Keep practicing as there really is no substitute for developing macro-vision.

Not bad at all. I'm curious about what your camera settings were. 3/4 sounds kind of high depending on what flash you are using. 1/4 is about the max I ever use, sometime 1/16 or less.

I think you did a good job with a running ant, I'm just learning to use speedlight and soft box too.

Thanks A-Peer, your comments are encouraging. These ants were constantly moving so I felt fortunate to get focus this good. I'll keep working on it.

I'm not sure why but I note that my settings were 1/200-sec at f/20, with ISO at 100. Last time out I used 1/125-sec at f/16 at ISO 100.
