Lens help

I own a small newspaper but would like to get jobs taking photo's. I own a Canon Rebel XS digital with the standard 35/80 lens along with a doubler and a 70/300 ( my old film one as it fit my digital - non stabilized). I would like the new Tamron 28/270 so I don't have to change lenses as often when I am out shooting for the paper. Is this lens good enough for detail photography such as events etc or am I better off changing lens constantly. I am not a novice but not an expert either just want to get better.

If you want a lot of range, I have found that my Sigma 18-250 works well and was priced very competitively. I use it on a 50D and a 7D. You might want to upgrade to an XTi to get more resolution.

I hate to sound like a broken record, why buy a lens before you try it. Rent one to see if you like it. There are numerous lens rental companies, Lens Giant is great. They may not have the lens you want to buy but you can try out a vareity of lens at a fraction of a cost

Lenses like that are versatile, but they ARE big and heavy. Maybe go to a camera store and feel it and see if it is something you could handle all the time or not. That's a lot of lens and it has considerable heft. Not everyone's cuppa tea.

I have a Rebel XTi and used to change lenses alot. I think dirt gets in the mirror etc with all that opening the insides to the air. I got a Tamron 28-300 and haven't desired to change lenses since. it does normal, wide angle, and telephoto all in one lense. You can even get some magnifying lenses for extreme closeups that screw on and are not very expensive at all.

ps. The 300 setting on the zoom lense does not give great detail, probably why Tamron dropped it to 270. Depending on how much detail you need you would go to some kind of super expensive high end zoom lense. But if you are using a Rebel like me you are probably in my financial range too, and when broke my Tamron lense by my own clumsiness, I bought another one immediately, I think it gives the most bang for the buck. I am an artistic photographer and sell my work at a gallery, and I pride myself on detail.
